Camping and Backpacking
Camping News from NewsTrove.com:
Just when I'm thinking that I liked interacting with nature better when I did so by sitting in my recliner reading books by Sig Olson and Paul Gruchow, a fawn emerges from the woods and stops by the roadside. The sun breaks through a cloud, turning the dew-laden leaves of the aspen a shimmering green. The sun falls on the golden brown back of the fawn, highlighting its white speckles. The fawn doesn't bolt off when she sees me and I get close enough to snap a photo. She hears the shutter click, then off she goes, a brown blur, heels and white-tail flying through the green underbrush.
Greef also provides the canisters of drinking water that are essential on such a trip, and visitors who don't have a tent can hire one from him.
Greeff ran his fast, 12-seater launch, Explorer 2000, up on the beach, leaving Ben and Lisa with a short stroll to their campsite. He advised them about the tides, where and when to snorkel, what to be careful of, and where the best coral sites were.
The camp site on Orpheus Island is not far from Yanks Jetty, the remains of a World War II depot where American warships were demagnetised to reduce their vulnerability to sea mines and radar exposure.
KOA joins forces with Vegas hotel
The Billings-based Kampgrounds of America has signed a 10-year lease with the Circusland RV Park in conjunction with the Circus Circus Hotel, Casino and Theme Park. This agreement positions KOA with one of the largest camping resorts in the United States. The new Las Vegas KOA at Circus Circus will begin serving campers beginning Dec. 1, 2003.
The combination of the two brands will provide groups and families an opportunity to camp on the Strip at one of the top family resorts in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas KOA at Circus Circus will operate under the management of KOA, Inc., which has nearly 500 campgrounds throughout U.S.
J.D. Freeman had two turkeys named Thanksgiving and Christmas that followed him around and would sit on a back porch swing with him.
"J.D. just had a spirit for animals. He loved those pet turkeys," said Patti Darwin of Lubbock, as she recalled fond memories of her late stepfather who died on Nov. 15.
"And when Thanksgiving and Christmas came around, those turkeys became lunch," Darwin said with a laugh.
According to J.D.'s surviving wife, Gladys, the 83-year-old retired farmer and rancher, also had a fondness for cats.
"What I liked most about J.D.

Trestle fire derails Amtrak, freight runs
The fire early Wednesday morning disrupted service for 800 Amtrak passengers and nearly 50 freight trains. Investigators have not ruled out arson as the cause of the blaze noticed at 2 20 a.m. near Avenue 26 and Santa Fe Boulevard. Two engineers on a southbound train saw the fire and stopped their train about 2 000 feet from the bridge.
