"There is no such thing at Shark River and outflow is over a coarse cobble beach with many boulders. Shark River is one of the real treasures of our North Coast, and a treasure largely because there is little or no human habitation in its catchment. This is not to say that has never been human habitation-the presence of nutmeg and cocoa trees in various places suggest that at one time cocoa plantations existed. In contrast to the Grand Riviere valley there is virtually no flat land beside the river and the sides of the catchment are steep and densely forested."

"Clara and Paul Goodrich Pioneer Alaskans Clara and Paul Goodrich will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Jan. 4 at the Snow Goose Restaurant in Anchorage. In 1938, Paul moved to Fairbanks, where he attended the University of Alaska while working during the summer at mines in Tofty and Woodchopper and for the F.E. Co. in Fairbanks Creek. Then, as a Marine reservist, wartime took him away. On assignment in a small Colorado town, Paul met Clara, and they went on their first date Dec. 20, 1943. They were married Jan. 9, 1944, in Colorado."

"At the Egg Rock tower outside Gembrook his comforts are few, but he still seems snug in his glass and steel cabin 30 metres above the ground, overlooking the vastness of Victoria. There's a smoky smudge in the distance, towards Western Port, but he has been briefed. It's a controlled burn near Lang Lang, designed to head off the bushfires that seem inevitable this season. Hoisting the binoculars, he murmurs: "They've done that well - got it up and running to a substantial fire for 18 hours, now they're really tidying it up and burning it back. It's very tricky with the melaleuca trees there, very volatile."

" I stumble downstairs in the chill to squat over a communal trough dividing the floor of a cement-walled stall. Head and shoulders above the partition looms my travelling companion John who is accustomed to somewhat more privacy in his California bathroom. From the unspeakable to the sublime we lift our gaze to the 5000 metre-high snow-dusted crags blushing musk pink in the early dawn."

"IT is a general phenomenon that subsidies and taxes are two key policy instruments that governments all over the world use to modify market outcomes. However, there is basic difference between taxes and subsidies. Taxes draw while subsidies inject money into expenditure stream. Though subsidies promote growth by increasing level of critical inputs like health, education and infrastructure, subsidies can also hinder growth by drawing away resources from more productive use and by causing allocation distortions."

"Editor's note: The following is the Thanksgiving proclamation President Kennedy made Nov. 5, 1963, which was read in many churches Thanksgiving Day on the urging of Kennedy's successor, Lyndon Johnson, two days after the nation buried its fallen leader. Over three centuries ago our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts far from home in a lonely wilderness set aside a time for thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the laws which bound them together and for the faith which united them under God."
