"Winter is the time to take an outdoor-related class By CASEY RESSLER-Valley Life editor Alaska's summer months are filled with endless days, many spent in the outdoors while hiking, fishing, rafting or camping. Conversely, the winter months can be filled with long, seeming endless nights of darkness -- giving the "summer" outdoorsman a long, dull season. The longer periods of inactivity are the perfect time to stay connected with many summertime activities. Of course, you can't go casting across the Little Su for king salmon yet, but you can get ready -- by going back to school."

"Tempe's treatment of the homeless doesn't sit well with a group of local activists. The group, Free to Camp Coalition, presented a petition with 1,170 signatures denouncing the city's Urban Camping Ordinance to the Tempe City Council on Thursday night. The Urban Camping Ordinance prohibits people from laying down bedding, constructing shelters, living in vehicles, starting fires or preparing food on public land in Tempe. Any person who violates the ordinance faces possible fines or jail time."

"Patty Derrickson finds good reason to stay with scouts. (Photo by Bibb Underwood) By BIBB UNDERWOOD - Special to the Record Patty Derrickson is a package of anomalies. She is a 52 year old kid. She is a female Boy Scout. She is an Oriental BISM (Born in San Marcos). She has taught more than 20 years in the San Marcos School system and retirement is not in her vocabulary. As if those characteristics were not enough to get your attention, she begins, "Daddy was a chicken sexer. (You read that correctly. A chicken sexer is able to determine males from females shortly after chickens are hatched.). His job took him all over."

"Sumner Cotton was the brains and spirit of the Maynard Outdoor Store. His store manager throughout most of the 1970s, Fred S. Wilson, was the nuts and bolts. That's how most who worked with the two businessmen recall the symbiotic relationship between Cotton and Wilson, mainstays in downtown Maynard where Cotton first opened the store in 1950. Although separated in retirement by nearly 130 miles, the two well-known Maynard merchants found themselves connected once again earlier this month. Cotton, 83, died Jan. 15 at the Wayside Hospice in Wayland where he had been staying."

"I start to giggle when I realize an alligator is responding to the human snore with his own version - a cross between a growl and a bellow. It seems an appropriate welcome for my first night at the Carroll family's "Gator Hole Camp," off Four Stakes Prairie in the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. "Why didn't you wake me up?" Ray Carroll jokes the next morning. "I would have liked to have heard it." A fourth-generation Southwest Floridian, Carroll has been camping in the wilds of Collier County ever since he can remember. As a young boy in the early '60s, he would accompany his grandfather on hunting treks to an area about a mile north."

"By GENEVIEVE BOOKWALTER Brent Pettey fashions his look after the Emigrant Wilderness. His gray shorts, deep green pack and weathered skin blend with the Sierra Nevada granite and sugar pines. That is no accident. As a teacher for the Leave No Trace program, which encourages wilderness visitors to leave only footprints, he instructs fellow outdoor lovers not to stand out as they hike along a trail. Bright colors could tarnish someone else's search for solitude, Pettey said. But Pettey's calm, solid voice comes naturally: It's as if the man who each year walks about 150 miles in U.S."
