The Humane Society
of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (HSCM), founded in 1786, was
the only maritime rescue service in New England during the heyday
of the American sailing industry and well into the age of steam.
On Martha's Vineyard, the HSCM guarded what was at the time
the second-busiest shipping channel in the world."

"Clued in: Detective Nancy Drew uncovers challenging new game
By Robin Ray/Kid Tech
Sunday, January 18, 2004
Nancy Drew is experiencing brand creep.
That's when someone gets the bright idea that a familiar brand name can be used to generate money via an endless stream of products, from the useful to the ridiculous. The simple (but clever) girl detective of our mothers' day has grown into a brand giantess, with an empire of board games, nightwear, software and many, many books. (A new series of books, written in a trendier style, is set to appear this spring.)
Not all of these attempts have gone well."

"Rhona, a seasoned internationalist, says: "Many of us are not merely teachers: we are also passionate about sport, and I think it's hugely important that we can convey that dedication to the pupils. I count myself very lucky that I have the school's backing to pursue my sport at the highest level but genuinely believe that everyone benefits in the long run."
John Knowles, rector of Hutchesons', adds: "Not everyone can reach the top of their field but I earnestly believe that everyone should be given encouragement to be the best they can be in every aspect of their school experience."

Pilot says fumes caused ill health -

"A former
pilot who claims he was forced to stop flying planes after
inhaling disinfectant fumes during the 2001 foot-and-mouth
outbreak is suing an airline for 250,000 damages.
Andrew
Sayers had been splashed on his way to the cockpit and became
dizzy during a flight, forcing him to switch to automatic
control, a court heard.
Following
the incident, he developed frequent coughing attacks and lost
his job.
His former
employer, Loganair, denies that it negligently exposed Mr
Sayers, 48, to chemical fumes and wants his action dismissed
by a judge at the Court of Session in Edinburgh."

"January 13, 2004 - "I won! I won! I can't believe I won!" fifth-grade Pearson's Corner teacher Linda Painter recalls yelling when she found out she was named the 2003 Conservation Teacher of the Year.
Painter was selected to receive the honor by the National Association of Conservation Districts and will now head to Hawaii this February to accept her award.
"I'm still just kind of in shock to tell you the truth," she said. "It's nice to get recognition not just for myself but for my school."

"One of the highlights of his 12-year sailing career was a trip he made alone from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to Neah Bay, Wash., in 1993.
He didn't sail directly north along the coast, a route that would have subjected him to strong headwinds and opposing seas, but in an arc that took him out into the Pacific near the Hawaiian Islands and then back to the mainland. He wrote about that voyage both in Ocean Navigator and 48 Degrees North: The Sailing Magazine."
