Great Barrier Island Oasis -

"If you look east from any of Auckland's beaches, and peer far off into the distance to the shimmering horizon, chances are you will spot the regions very own mystical, romantic, unspoilt oasis; the Great Barrier Island. Situated in the outer Hauraki Gulf, this island paradise is literally the 'barrier' of Auckland. It acts as a barricade against the eastern swells that would otherwise tear at the innards of the harbour."

"BIKES, in Willie Porter's view, are designed for riding, exploring, taking in different sights, sounds and experiences. So it was no surprise to learn, when I met him, that he'd travelled extensively on the Continent and also had been to Morocco five times - twice by bike. I first heard of Willie just over a year ago. A mutual friend told me: "I think you'll find him a very good subject for a column, he's very interesting and he has made some trips that have taken him well off the beaten track."

"It was the baby boomers—fresh from college and full of idealism—that John F. Kennedy called to service when he launched the Peace Corps in 1961. Four decades later, boomers looking to reinvent retirement are once again trekking across the globe to make a difference in the lives of the less-privileged. We talked to NEA-Retired members serving children and their fellow educators in far-flung spots around the world: India, Thailand, Tanzania, and St. Lucia. A snapshot of what they're doing—and what they've learned."

Slim, most definitely. However, what was once considered rare behavior -- men going to spas to relax and indulge -- is now commonplace. It's a trend that has been quietly building momentum for a number of years."

Today's Blog Comments about "Whitewater Rafting" from Feedster.com.

" So... I was looking at photos from summer and I really want it to come... hardcore.
I can't fucking wait for summer blockbusters and sunlight.
I'm saying I can't wait for sunlight... the same kid that lurks in the shadows and eats children when they walk buy... Ahh such are the times.
I can't wait for rainstorms and whitewater rafting.
I hope it's what I'm expecting.

So after looking around at the pictures. I made one (my new icon... yes it's me... I slowed the shutter... hott)

My friend Larry got me hooked on orchids. Ever since I saw that show "The Orchid Hunter" in 11th grade I always thought they were hott...
We had to draw a plant for art and I choose an Orchid from the green house (the lady slipper kind...)
I'll post progress (if I get bored.)
So... I realized that procrastination(sp..haha.) sucks... and I'm good at it... I have a paper due tomorrow and I plan on writting it in the 2 hours free that I have before class...

Why am I such an idiot? "

Got The Job! -

"

I've been trying to get this Summer internship through my church at home in Minnesota and I found out I just got the Internship. A lot of people were applying for the job and I was one of the 12 who got it. It's a $2000 paid internship and I am pumped. I was just about to fill out an application to go to Indonesia this summer but it turns out I will be working this internship.

I'll give you a little background information on this job... We start off with a leaders retreat, which i am not sure where we are going. Then every day from 9-12pm we meet as a group, give testimonies, go over scripture, and grow together as a group. The rest of the day we plan missions trips. This year I believe we are going to Juarez Mexico, Utah for whitewater rafting, And to Canada on houseboats to go water skiing and fun stuff like that.

We also have to plan fun things to do through out the week like BBQs, Valley Fair, Wisconsin dells, and other fun stuff. We also have Bible Studys durng the week and I will have around 6-7 guys in my group for that. This will be a huge chance to help out these younger kids... they said that kids at the junior high age level really have crucial decisions that they need help making in their life as far as Faith, this is what excites me.

Bad travel and good travel ... -
From: www.livejournal.com

" So the past few weeks I've been thinking more and more about travel ... and I've been daydreaming, and I've been starting to make plans. I'll have the usual half-dozen work trips to arcane yet uninspired destinations this year, but it looks like there will be a respectable amount of "fun" travel, as well. I've got tentative trips lined up to Seattle and New England to attend conferences, and internationally there will likely be a short trip to Europe followed by two extended third-world adventures. Adding my usual summertime wanderings in the western mountains to the list gives me a 2004 schedule that is still fuzzy but is getting very full.

This week, I got started by making concrete plans for two trips -- one that will suck, and one of which will be a blast. The sucky one is of course another 10-day work trip to Pierre, South Dakota -- Jen and I will be flying out on February 17th. It will be mostly office time, and the weather promises to be sucky, too ... and I've long ago exhausted every possible means of entertainment in that sleepy little burg. Sigh ... but it's a living.

The other set of reservations I made, though ... well, they're for something tremendous. Most of you guys know that my extended family has a summer place in the Uinta Mountains of Utah ... well, it's fairly near a spot called Dinosaur National Monument, which has great whitewater rafting in some of the most gorgeous canyon country in the world. I've done several extended river trips through there in the past few years, and this year my sister and I are joining a four-day, 70-mile raft trip down the Yampa and Green Rivers. The scenery is magnificent and wonderfully desolate, the companionship and food are always good, and the river guides are inevitably bronzed and adorable.

She and I did this same trip three years ago, and it was nearly perfect. Here's a so-so shot I took then of dawn at the first night's campsite ... it's where I'll be spending my birthday this year:

THIS IS THE LIFE EH...? -

" "Fee diddly dee an actor's life for me!"

Whitewater rafting on the Tully River provides a fun and strenuous workout but can have its hairy moments.
Ten metres below the ocean's surface, each breath you take sounds like the on-rushing roar of a freight train. At least it does to a first-time scuba diver. On the surface, my dive instructor had told me if I was thinking about my breathing then I was doing it wrong. The idea, he said, was to breathe easily to both calm the nerves and conserve oxygen.

Easier said than done. The whole idea of breathing underwater is unnatural and the first time I slipped below the surface and took a deep breath I fully expected my lungs to fill with water.

That didn't happen. Soon the wondrous sights of Australia's Great Barrier Reef proved distracting enough that before I knew it, my 30-minute introductory dive was over and I was back onboard the dive ship, dripping, and grinning from ear to ear.

"It's smiles like that that make me love my job," said Luke, the 31-year-old dive captain aboard the Reef Encounter, a 35-metre catamaran based out of Cairns.

Luke had taken my arm to coax me below the water, which is a completely addictive activity once you get past your fears. After the safety drills we explored the reef, its amazing colours and abundant marine life.

I had been told not to touch the reef -- it is made up of living organisms and too many ignorant folk think nothing of breaking off a chunk as a souvenir -- but Luke did introduce me to a clam that had to be as big as my stove.

Everything's big here, from starfish which are a metre across, to myriad schools of 30-pounders, to the reef itself, which runs 2,000 km down the coast of Queensland in Eastern Australia.

The Reef Encounter offers overnight diving and snorkelling tours, providing accommodation for 48 in shared or single rooms with three meals a day. There's a comfortable dining room/saloon and lots of space to sun, but getting down to see one of the wonders of the world is the main attraction. Overnight on the Reef Encounter runs from $370 Aud, including dive equipment.

My shipmates were certified divers who could explore more of the reef than my all-too-brief introductory dive was able to offer. Serious divers go on night dives, which look as unnerving from above as I'm told it is from below, but is the best time to see reef life in action. You might catch the coral's annual spawning, which happens just one night a year and is said to resemble an upside down snowfall as the coral's eggs float to the surface.

AUSTRALIA'S GREAT BARRIER REEF offers more than 2,000 km of amazing colours and abundant marine life for snorkellers and scuba divers.

Many reef tours operate out of Cairns, a city of nearly 100,000 in north Queensland, a tropical region on roughly the same latitude as Tahiti. Though you can access the reef further south in the more populated regions around Brisbane and the Gold Coast, it's closest to the mainland here.

The Reef Encounter is at sea most of the time so guests are usually ferried the 2 1/2 hours out. The well-heeled can cut that to 30 minutes via helicopter, not only more convenient -- causing other passengers envy as you disembark on the Encounter's top deck -- but providing a spectacular introduction to the reef.

Our pilot enjoyed the flight as much as my group did, pointing out giant sea turtles and tiger sharks. This is the way to get a full sense of the reef, a chain of coral structures ranging in size from a few square metres to a few square kilometres. Great Barrier Reef Helicopter Group services a number of dive boats in the region.

Cairns (pronounced "cans" locally) is the centre of tourism in the region with a wide range of accommodation and restaurants to fit most budgets. The city is popular with the Japanese -- a seven-hour flight from Tokyo -- and many business people are fluent in the language. There is a decent casino at the Sofitel Reef Hotel and the city has an active nightlife with dance clubs and live music.

Another popular activity is whitewater rafting on the Tully River. The river is about two hours south of Cairns in the low mountains of the Great Dividing Range, so outfits such as R2 rafting provide transportation from your hotel. While many sleep on the drive (see nightlife, above), the ride gives glimpses of real life. Interspersed with tropical vistas are sugar cane and banana plantations that dominate the agricultural industry here.

AUSTRALIA'S GREAT BARRIER REEF offers more than 2,000 km of amazing colours and abundant marine life for snorkellers and scuba divers.

At our riverside departure point, we collect safety gear -- lifejackets and helmets -- before being divided into six-person crews, each with a R2 guide. Though the Tully is a technical river -- 45 rapids ranging from class 3-4 -- and has its hairy moments, guides are well-versed in dealing with novice paddlers and safety is paramount. The five-hour paddle can be a real workout, and you will get wet, but the guides make it fun and the rainforest scenery is stunning. A barbecue lunch is included and you can purchase pictures or a video of your day afterward.

About an hour's drive north of Cairns is Port Douglas, an upscale seaside town the locals brag attracts the likes of Bill Clinton. The former U.S. president dined here on Sept. 11, 2001, just hours before the Twin Towers were attacked (it's about 15 hours ahead of New York). A plate, cheerfully signed by Clinton, hangs in the Salsa Bar and Grill as an eerie reminder of the world before the war on terror began.

Excellent boutique hotels and fine dining line Wharf Street, such as Outrigger on the Inlet where we stayed, while a little further out five-star resorts, one with a decent looking golf course, sprawl among the palms.

Drop into the Rainforest Habitat park for an introduction to the region's unique wildlife and plants before heading out to see the real thing in Daintree National Park, about an hour's drive north. The landscape is quintessential tropics -- lush, green hills ringed by sandy white beaches.

We took all this in on horseback with Wonga Beach Trail Rides, recently host to both the reality show The Amazing Race and actor Keanu Reeves, on a break from filming sequels to the Matrix in Sydney.

ARRIVING ABOARD the Reef Encounter in grand style, by helicopter.

Stable owner Bernie Maloney, dubbed by local papers as Australia's horse whisperer, is a modest and engaging bear of a man, who achieved fame when he was able to saddle a notorious stallion just after a touring American failed. The American had attracted hundreds of jackaroos (Australian cowboys who work the vast cattle ranches in the nearby Outback) and the mood was black when he gave up after a few hours.

"I felt bad for all those people who had travelled as much as eight hours to this guy and he couldn't do it," Maloney said of his turn in the spotlight.

No such preparation was needed for our horses, but Maloney made sure we were up to speed with the basics of horse riding.

"Let the horse know you are in control and there won't be any problems," Maloney told us.

We rode through mango groves and dense rainforest before emerging on the beach near the mouth of the Daintree River. We practised canters and gallops, splashing our way along the deserted shoreline.

Coming up for air and resting on the dive deck.

Last stop: Daintree Park, reached by crossing the Daintree River by cable ferry. It's a quick five-minute trip, but seeing as the river is inhabited by those infamous saltwater crocs Steve Irwin is so fond of, you're glad to back on firm ground.

The Daintree is an ecologist's dream. The rainforest is one of the oldest in the world at 130 million years of age, and giant trees soar to the top of the canopy in the battle for sunlight.

Drive through the park or stop at a number of points and hike. Mossman Gorge, just south of the park, is a beautiful spot to cool off.

Near here, at what is now Cape Tribulation, Capt. James Cook ran his ship the Endeavour aground in 1770. British settlement then began in earnest with the establishment of a penal colony near present-day Sydney.

Whitewater rafting on the Tully River provides a fun and strenuous workout but can have its hairy moments.

Tomorrow is Australia Day and the country will celebrate those inauspicious beginnings. A recent editorial in The Australian, one of the country's larger newspapers, suggested changing the national holiday because there was more to celebrate than "just the arrival of the first boatload of convicts."

After my brief visit, I couldn't agree more.

BOTTOM LINE

GETTING THERE: Air Canada offers connections to Sydney through Vancouver or Los Angeles via Qantas directly or via Air New Zealand through Auckland. If you can fly business class, as I did with Air New Zealand, I recommend it. Qantas provides domestic connections out of Sydney. Check connection times because a day room at one of the hotels near the Sydney airport might be a worthwhile investment.

WHEN TO GO: Our summer is Australia's winter and vice versa. In Cairns, November to April is its hot rainy season, with the added bonus of the deadly box jellyfish infesting the coastal beaches. Many Australians vacation from May to October to avoid the heat.
