"By Brian Downing GWRRA #128583 Gambrills, Maryland Photos by Barry Monaco Chapter J from Maryland's State Capitol, Annapolis, has traditionally started the riding season with a ride to Luray, Virginia, for lunch. This might seem a pretty bland idea, but to get to Luray involves a round trip of around 250 miles and can encompass some really beautiful scenery. Along with the lunch in Luray, some other traditions have grown around the ride."

"A Kingston couple has created a business around a love they share for outdoor adventure. Joel and Kathy Zachry, long-time Kingston residents, lead small groups of hikers on excursions in the Great Smoky Mountains and other mountain ranges in all 50 states. The Appalachian Trail is the destination several times a year for the Zachrys, who have a personal goal of hiking the whole trail. They have hiked the southern section many times leading groups. This year, with an advanced group of hardy backpackers, they will hike a section in New Hampshire, closing in on their goal, Mount Katahdin in Maine- the end of the trail."

"This year, with an advanced group of hardy backpackers, they will hike a section in New Hampshire, closing in on their goal, Mount Katahdin in Maine- the end of the trail. "You run into people on the trail and they ask you how long have you been on the trail. I'll say 30 years," said Joel Zachry. A crash course in natural biology is a byproduct of hiking with the Zachrys. Joel Zachry, a professor in biology at Pellissippi State Technical Community College, is an expert ecologist, and Kathy Zachry has an advanced degree in biomedical engineering. They have been leading wilderness tours for 22 years."

"

Hey ya!  So here I am in New Zealand and I could not have asked for better weather.  Apparently the week before I arrived, NZ has had their 100 year flood.  There is plenty of evidence of flood damage around but the skies have been clear and blue for the last week, which is strange because apparently NZ usually has very unpredictable and unstable weather.  So I arrived in Auckland with plenty of hassle from customs and spent 2 nights in the city.  I don't have much to say about Auckland because I didn't enjoy it too much.  I mainly used it as a base to get myself orientated with being in a new country and try to figure out how to get myself around in the next month.  I finally decided on booking a bus tour called Stray which will take me around both islands and leave my in Christchurch at the end.  So far, so good.  I have seen some beatiful countryside, learned a bit about Kiwis, and met some wonderful people.  I am in Windy Wellington getting ready to see The Lord of the Rings, but first I'll fill you in on what I have been doing along the way...

I left Auckland last Thrusday morning on a bus with 27 others.  We drove up to the top of Mt Eden which had a grand view of the city and all its bays.  I liked Auckland a bit better from this view and was glad to be on my way.  We continued south through the Waikato farmland area.  Hobbiton was not far away and I am sad to not have visited it, but it was a bit out of the way.  Instead I headed on to Raglan for the night.  Raglan is famous for its surf and has been in a few movies of its own. We spent the afternoon soaking up some sun and checking out some surfers.
The following morning we went to Waitomo and saw where a lot of the flood damage was.  This area is chock full of limestone caves and many of them where still closed to the public.  A few people decided to go blackwater rafting through the caves but I decided to stay dry and went to the funny farm instead.  It was a very funny Kiwi cultural show and of course it included sheep.  (If you don't know, NZ has 10 times more sheep than people and there are plenty of jokes about this).  Anyway, that evening we drove up the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula and stayed in the town of Hahei.  We had a tasty BBQ that night and went sea kayaking the following morning to Cahedral Cove.  We had coffee and biscuits on the beach and went for a swim before heading back to the bus and on to Mt Maunganui.  Mt Maungaui is the Gold Coast of NZ with great beaches, sky rises, heaps of retired people and outrageous property values.  We didn't stay here for long and instead went on to the small town of Maketu where we stayed with a native Maori named Uncle Boy.  His family cooked us a tradional Hangi meal and put on a concert for us at night.  I learned how to do the poi dance while the guys learned the haka.  It was good fun and one big house party that didn't end unitl the wee hours of the morning.
The next morning came too soon and we were on to Rotorua, known by the locals as Roto-Vegas, but I think it's other nickname fits better...Roto-Rotten.  Rotorua is one big area full of smelly, thermo activity... geysers, boiling mud, steaming dirt, and thermo pools.  There is also plenty of crazy adventure activities available like skydiving, zorbing, huku jets and whitewater rafting.  I did none of those but I did check out the park in town with all the thermo activity.  We drove on to Taupo that night where the Ironman competition had just finished and prepared ourselves for our own in the morning.  We were up bright and early to complete the 17km Tongariro crossing in Tongariro National Park or better known as Mordor.  It was a killer hike and I mean that quite literally.  My feet are so beaten up and sore, but it was worth it.  The views were brilliant, along with the Emerald lakes, Red Crater and other steaming thermo activity.  It was precious.  We stayed in Whakapapa Village that night next door to the Grand Chateau where the cast and crew of The Lord of the Rings spent many weeks filming the scenes of Middle Earth.  I believe I even spotted an Orc during the hike out of the corner of my eye.
So here I am in Wellywood.  I am staying 2 nights here before taking the ferry across to the South Island on Thursday morning.  I have tickets booked to see The Return of the King tomorrow night at the Embassy Theatre where the world premiere was.  Maybe I'll sit in the same seat as Orlando?  One could only hope!  New Zealand is very proud of these movies and they should be.  I arrived in Auckland the morning after their 11 Oscar wins and I was afraid the entire country would be shut down and partying in the streets.  It wasn't like that, but it would have been great if it was, eh?

my attempt to sum up an awesome weekend -

" My mind is still sleeping so bear with me.

Saturday-

got up, stole cash from Creedy and headed to Sam's club. Bought tons-o-food and ran out of money. waited til Creedy came home for lunch and stole some more. Went to PetSmart, bought Tarot's dog food, and the cats' food. through some gas in my truck and went home and vegitated.

Sunday-

Woke up at 5 am and started getting ready for our road trip. Woke Creedy up for the 3rd time at 5:30 and made him get dressed and all for the day. Grabbed something quick to eat so his sugar wouldn't bottom out and hit the road. drove two and a half hours to St. Pete to grab Lucan and Chen. Saw the sign on I-4 for 275 right lane. Get in the right lane and as we're exiting Creed looks over and sees ANOTHER sign, 275 south LEFT land. >.< First sign had not specified a direction. turn around and head back the other way. Missed our turnoff cause we were looking for Park Blvd and by 275 it's 694 that turns into Park. Finally got to Lucan and Chen's place half an hour later than we meant to. whoops..
squished everybody into my truck and headed to Busch Gardens. Get me and Creed's platinum passes printed off and get Lucan and Chen's admittance for 1/2 price and go to head in when we realize that Creed still has his knife on him. wait for another 20 minutes while he takes the tram back to the truck to drop it off and come back. get in the park and head for Montu, ranked one of the top 5 coasters in the world. Chen had never been on a coaster at all so we worked on the theory of getting the worst out of the way first that way the others would all be tamer. Sounds good in theory right? I'm still taking that she got off it laughing as a good sign! I'd hate to think she had an absolutely horrible time, but that's sittin in the back of my mind anyway. We walked through Africa and checked out sleeping Hyenas, a meerkat running laps and two baby vultures. hopped on the train and took it to the Congo where we rode Kumbaa first which Chen liked better, and then we hit the Congo River rapids. One of those whitewater rafting rides. Through our cellphones in the popcorn bucket so they wouldn't get wet and that worked! We, however, got soaked. It was fun though. We made fun of the people across from us wearing ponchos. why get on a water ride if you don't want to get wet? Grabbed bbq at Stanleyville Smokehouse and hit the log flume ride. I got a soggy flipflop out of that. But it was fun for a flume ride. walked over to the Lory's and fed them a bit while dodging the projectial liquid poop. (those guys can really get some distance!) Hit Gwazi the wooden coaster. that beats ya up a bit. Caught a bird show somewhere in there with Lolita the storytelling parrot and Bart the Condor who just did NOT want to fly. He sat on the railing in the back row of the audience and stared at people instead. But we got to see him really up close that way. Took the flying gondolas back to the Serangeti and hit Rhino Rally. Got in a landrover with transmission issues so we kept getting stuck, but the "guide" made it a fun trip anyway. Pink chickens on stilts! then since it was getting late, we hit the Hyena's one more time so we could see them when they were actually awake and doing something. then hit a gift shop on the way out so we could bust a large bill and use it for gas on the way back to Lucan and Chen's. I got a really cute t-shirt out of it though. Blue tiedye with a large overall pocket painted on it and a white tiget cub in the pocket. and we got a stuffed Clydesdale too. headed back towards St. Pete's and hit the Golden Corral for dinner. Never been there before. I really liked it. REAL mashed potatoes!!! mrrr. got back to the apartment and promptly crashed.

Monday-

hit IHOP for breakfast and went with Lucan and Chen to Petsmart so they could bring the 55 gallon fishtank home. Easier in an SUV than a car. and went to Lucan's mom's house so Creedy could meet Meesha the husky. Lucan I want to steal your dog! hehe. Took her to the park and let her run around for awhile. Let Creedy drool all over a car for awhile and then headed back to Orlando. Tried to pay our electric bill and found out they don't take cash payments. >.< So I have to wait til Thursday, float em a check and overnight the money to my mom so the deficit in my account won't eat it. Decided we didn't want to be home yet and we were right by I-4 so we headed to Sea World for an hour or so. Rode the water flume/coaster ride there and the big coaster which puts Montu to shame, fed the stingrays, walked through the huge shark tank and then headed to the parking lot. Got to drool on the Clydesdale in full harness regalia. and then headed for dinner. All the food in the house needed defrosting at at 7 pm.. by the time it defrosts it's time for bed. Ended up at Steak & Shake. then went home and died.

Now I have to plot out how to lure Lucan and Chen to Orlando so me and Creedy can treat em to Sea World and a bbq out back. =P "
