Well, Dan knows what Oregon looks like -

" Pam moved. I've been moving. But now I'm done moving. Oh, wait. No, I'm not.

I just spent five days at the hippie wedding of two of my best friends in rural central Oregon, three hours from the nearest international airport. Five days of swimmin' in the ol' swimmin' hole and whitewater rafting and spending more time with some people in this one week than I have in total so far this year. That made it fun. Since I was a member of the wedding party, I also had a tremendous amount of responsibility, and the sight of me wearing a bathing suit and a concerned scowl running across a grassy expanse holding a manila folder brimming with papers was not an uncommon one. I was the picture of crisp efficiency. I couldn't get people to stop telling the groom what an "old soul" he was in three consecutive days of toasts, but other than that the whole thing a total success. Except that my pilot also gave the couple a toast as the plane was leaving Portland and they weren't even on the plane. No, he didn't. But I can't believe he didn't. Because, I mean, everybody else did.

Now, it's not like I travel all the time, but I've flown the distance back and forth across this country enough times to have made one simple cardinal rule about air travel. And that rule is: "Life's too short to switch planes in Denver." I will travel out of state to get the direct flight, and had to do just that, in fact, booking my flight to Portland out of Newark Airport. My flight was to leave on Wednesday morning, so Tuesday night I had planned to drive to my sister's house in northern Jersey, stay the night, eat dinner with her and her husband and my adorable and perfect niece and nephew, drive to Newark Airport the following morning, leave the car in long-term parking, and pick it up when my flight arrived back in New Jersey on Sunday evening. The perfect crime.

Until the car didn't start. I conjured a tow truck to my car's location, but after a jump that didn't jump and a can of gas that didn't gas (I became convinced during my two-hour wait for the truck that someone had stolen my gas right out of the tank. Shut up), the tow truck guy told me the closest Saturn dealership had closed and that there was nothing he could do. And then he left. All those cranes and levers and pulleys and he never even showed intent to tow. Shut up, tow guy. The next tow truck came from the town my parents live in, and it towed the car forty miles to a dealership that had a drop box where he could just leave the car overnight. Thank you, suburbs. Thank you, mom, for picking up my car when it was fixed. Eff you, $200 towing fee. I know. I'm a diva. I made my mother pick up my car. But what the hell else was I going to do? I don't have the chance to invoke the "but I was in rural Oregon" defense that often, so I'm going to go for it here.

It could have been so much worse, I argued to myself during this lengthy opportunity for introspection. It could have happened on Sunday at midnight in the long-term parking lot at Newark Airport after a six-hour flight. It could have happened when I was driving Pam up to see her mom. It could have happened in a box with a fox. But, in other news, it could have just NOT HAPPENED AT ALL.

The following morning, after a 4:30 AM alarm, a subway, a train, a shuttle, a purchase of the new Vanity Fair, a misguided trip to McDonalds, and a walk, Tracie and I met at Newark Airport. She was flying in from Providence and transferring to my flight that left from a few gates down, so I actually got to meet her incoming flight at the gate, just like in the olden days. Our flight was a delightful mix of a ninety minute delay and a showing of Johnson Family Vacation, which was an amazing pick on account of it not being Starsky & Hutch. Have you flown recently? Do you feel like there are movies being made just to fill a quota of lame movies worthy only of being shown on airplanes? Then you've seen Starsky & Hutch.

It was on the cramped (well, not for me, as the driver) three hour drive to Bend that Tracie and I actively started to turn the whole thing into an episode of The Amazing Race. It was on the cramped three hour drive back to Portland in the pelting rain through mountains and sheer rock cliffs and weather so loud we couldn't hear the radio that Tracie and I actively started to turn the whole thing into an episode of Punk'd.

On the flight back to New York (well, New Jersey), they really, actually showed Starsky & Hutch. I think it was the fifth time it's played on an airplane I've been on, so I finally let the badgering work its insidious magic and I watched the whole thing. When it was over, I got up to use the restroom, and I walked past a gentleman watching a portable DVD player, on which was unspooling...Starsky & Hutch. I can't believe the whole plane didn't just disappear into the matrix. But the direct flight action worked out blissfully, and we landed ten minutes early, while other flights with our friends on them 1) missed their connections in Cincinnati and 2) missed their connections in Chicago. People? Life's too short to...well, you know.

And, as of five minutes ago, I'm going to LA next week. I've never said the words "Okay, but I must fly business class" with a straight face before, but it seemed like the appropriate time to test-drive said sentiment seeing as I haven't flown all the way across the country since YESTERDAY.

Help.

River Dance... -

" Hmmm...let's see, what did I do this weekend? Oh yeah, I went WHITEWATER RAFTING!!!

Okay, so I was the one whining and crying about being scared and ooh and ahh and I'm not sure I want to do this. Dork. That was absolutely the most fun I've ever had. On my feet, that is. Okay here's the rundown cause I really want to remember this in years to come...

So of course my traveling partner, Miss Tam, overslept and we left about a half hour behind schedule. Which, while annoying, gave me plenty of time to get my house cleaned up and even put together some pork chop/veggie packets for MH and boy to have for dinner Saturday night. Poor MH, he wanted to go so bad but he is not well. He went to the ER on Friday and they gave him some meds but they are not working very well and the thought of a two hour car ride was more than he could bear. He was very sad but tried to be brave even though I was bailing on him in his hour of need. Anyway, finally, we're on the road and it was just like old times. I forgot how annoyed I get at her and how betrayed I still feel most the time. We just had a road trip. And it was good. So we flew over, worried about time. We stopped in Grangeville for breakfast (mental note: never have breakfast in a gas station-ook) and it hit us there that we didn't know if the instructions on our sheet meant pacific standard time or mountain time. Riggins is on mountain time. But we were getting picked up in Lucille which is PST. Confusing. But then we read the other sheet and it said pst so we relaxed. We stopped on top of Whitebird hill for a breather and to absorb the awesome view of the canyon floor where the Nez Perce Indian wars officially began. White man tried to force red man onto rez, red man, not impressed tries to flee to Canada, white man decides he'd rather red man stick around, red man decide white man needs ass kicked. SOmething like that. It's a really sad and tragic story and I encourage everyone to read "I will fight no more forever..." or watch the made for tv movie of the same name. Chief Joe was so cool and was treated so badly. Anyway....that's another story.

Once you get down Whitebird hill your on the little Salmon river. It was very exciting for us because we knew that in a few minutes we'd be floating down that very river. We oohed and aahed over the rapids we saw but trust me you have no idea what there like till your in them. We made it to the meeting point and loaded into a van that took us up into the canyon. Lucille is nine miles from Riggins and we drove through Riggins and way up the other side of the river along this terrifyingly narrow backroad and were finally dropped off on a beach with about 200 or more other people. They did a quick safety chat and helped us into lifejackets and then we got our boat assignments and shoved off. Our guide was a great guy named Tipton. Tipton has a very difficult life. He works as a river guide in the summer, travels to Europe to backpack in the spring and fall and winters in Vail, working in a ski shop and snowboarding 6 hours a day. Rough. Poor kid. Why did I make such poor choices when I was young?

Anyway, off we went and right away we spotted a golden eagle, hunting overhead. Tipton was full of history and gossip and bad jokes and he kept us totally entertained for the first part of the trip which was very mild. We hit a few choppy spots, especially the bend in the river but he said we hadn't even hit the first rapid which made us all giggle nervously. in all we did 7 rapids, three class II's, two class III's and two class IV's. The trip took about five hours including an hour long stop for lunch. Lunch was incredibly delicious in the way only food served outdoors when your hot and sweaty and working your ass off can taste. It was just deli meat sandwhiches which we made ourselves, fruit and chips and soda and chocolate chip cookies. Not too heavy that you didn't want to get back on the boat. After lunch the guides too the cage off one of the rafts and flippped it over into the river, creating a slide which was put to very good use. People would take off running down the beach while the guides splashed water on the bottom of the raft with their paddles, then jump and slide and at the last second the guides would lift the end of the raft, sending the person hurtling into space and eventually face first into the river. There was a lot of belly flops but a lot of world class diving, rolling, somersaulting and cannonballing. It was hilarious and fun and gave us just enough time to get our legs back. Then off we went again for the second half of the trip.

I can't really describe the experience of rafting. If you haven't done it...do it right away. I was never scared or even nervous for one second, even when we were at the top of a rapid looking down at an eight foot hole that we were about to plunge headfirst into. It was exhilerating, exciting, life afirming. By the time we'd finished lunch, Tam and I were grilling Tipton about the three day trips they do into the canyon. We prebooked one as soon as we hit town. it was just so much fun. We even jumped out and floated alongside the boat for a couple miles. It was hot, 95 or so and we got sunburned and burnt out and floating in the 70 degree water was just the thing. The end of the trip came way too soon. We'd barely got to use our best material. We did sing the Land of the Lost theme when we went into a rapid sideways and did a death spin. Marshall, Will and Holly, on a routine expedition...

Tipton told us that it was the end of the season and that there was a huge party at a bar in town that night. It was a costume kind of thing, the trick was that you couldn't wear anything that was actually clothing. Interesting. We went and checked into the hotel, which was gorgeous and very very nice. It's log cabin style, with a huge two story window that looks out over the bend and the canyon. Our room was awesome, classy. Nothing was attached, the lamps or the tv. Theft is apparently not a problem there. We showered and flopped down for a few to recharge. Called home and made everyone very jealous. Then we went and had dinner, shot pool and played shuffleboard and chatted up the locals. The party was interesting, we didn't stay long cause for one thing we were overdressed and for another the average age was about 24. And we were exhausted and starting to feel the effects of paddling the canoe. Tam had to watch her hottie swimmer guy on the Olympics anyway and I was a bit sunstroked I think. Had a cheesy continental breakfast the next morning and then went and sat in the outdoor hot tub in the rain and swam in the pool. Then we got dressed and went to town where two different photo shops had digital pix of our adventure for our perusal and purchase. There were some awesome pix and we each bought three differnt shots. We sure look like we're having a blast. They are posted on the internet if anyone cares to look. I'm adventure girl.

The trip back was nice, we took it slow and stopped at some roadside attractions. The battlefield memorial half way up whitebird hill where you can also view the old whitebird hill which has twelve complete switchbacks and no guard rail. We used to go down that thing pulling a trailer when I was a kid. Ook. Scary. The new hill is much better. We stopped at Hoots cafe for breakfast cause you have too. It's a total greasy spoon but has the best hashbrowns and gravy and huge portions. Nasty wierd bathroom though. We drove thru grangeville and happened on the Wooly Mammoth bones that were found in some lake up there. We were just driving along the highway and I looked over and there he was, in a small glass enclosed building. You have to peek in at him and he looks sad and lonely and a little creepy as only a skeleton can. Then we drove out to winchester lake cause we'd never been out there and it was pretty but full of algae and not for swimming in. The weather had turned anyway and it was raining.

Then we went home. I know I'm not doing the experience justice here. It was so awesome, so exciting and really got us fired up to do more stuff like that. I highly recommend rafting to anyone. I'm taking the kids into hells canyon asap. I can't believe we live at the mouth of hells canyon and have never gone. Stupid. Do it right away if you can!!!

now I best get to work...

oh. ps. my son has a date this afternoon. he's going to the movies with the trollop. i am not thrilled. my baby.... "

"

Holy hell I am exhausted. It was totally worth it though. That was so much fun it should definately be illegal. I can most certainly say that I will go whitewater rafting as many times as I'm given the opportunity.

Friday my friend Jamie & I left for Trout Lake, a tiny town near White Salmon Washington by the Columbia river to secure the campsite for the 11 of us that were going on the rafting trip together. We left around 2:30pm and hit a nasty wall of traffic that "
