"Storm overcomes wind, BCC By BRIAN MURPHY Sports Editor MANLIUS -- If the wind didn't play havoc with Blommington Central Catholic's offense then the Bureau Valey defense did as the Storm rolled to a 23-6 Class 3A playoff win Saturday afternoon. Winds blowing from 30 to 40 mph out of the west all afternoon made punts and kickoffs an adventure. And the Bureau Valley defense held the Saints to a total of 44 yards, only 12 after a first quarter score that went for 32 yards. Both teams elected to go for first downs instead of punting when headed into the wind -- even deep in their own territory."

Welcome to Wales - Part 13

Snowdonia National Park

Mount Snowdon Photo courtesy of Dave Newbould While Wales is home to three

national parks - Brecon Beacons National Park, Snowdonia National Park and

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park - Snowdonia is one of the most popular

destinations in the country. Mount Snowdon, in northwest Wales, is the

centerpiece of the park and also the tallest mountain in Wales and England

towering over the countryside at 1085 metres (nearly 3,560 feet). The mountain

is an impressive sight in both scenery and proportion. The park itself was

established in 1951 and is one of the largest National Parks in Britain, second

only to England's Lake District.

Much more than a National Park, Snowdonia is a worthwhile area for several

reasons. The park plays host to dozens of recreational opportunities: walking,

hiking, climbing, pony trekking, whitewater rafting and many others. The view

from the summit of Mount Snowdon, whether it is reached by riding the Snowdon

Mountain Railway or by climbing, is spectacular. The mountain overlooks the

landscape of flowing rivers and small mountain villages. Approximately 500,000

people reach the summit each year.

York:

The City of York is one of England s most popular tourist destinations and one

of the most well preserved ancient cities in Europe. Its medieval walls from the

13th and 14th Centuries are still mostly intact; a highlight of any trip here is

the one-hour circuit of these walls. The walls have four gigantic gates known as

bars. The narrow streets are known as gates, the even narrower alleys are known

as snickets or snickleways. Today all over northern England many people refer to

an urban alley as a snicket.

York s history goes back to Roman times when it was a garrison called Eboracum.

In turn it then was a Saxon (known as Eoforwic), Danish (Jorvik from which the

name York was derived) and Norman settlement, a fashionable Georgian resort on a

par with Bath and then in Victorian times a booming railway centre. It is also

home to the Rowntrees Company another of Britain s famous chocolate and

confectionery manufacturers. Like Cadbury s in Birmingham, the original founders

were Quaker and were pioneers in providing good working conditions and other

benefits to their employees.

London - Part 8

The London Underground railway system (or tube as it is known by the locals) is

by far the best way to get around in London. The key to successful trips to any

destination in the London area is to find out the name of the nearest tube

station (nearly all businesses and attractions publish this), and plan a route

on the easy to obtain map of the underground.

Buses are also excellent, but a little more complex and slower to use. A variety

of passes are available for visitors to have unlimited travel on the

underground, buses or both for a selected period. These represent excellent

value for money and are very convenient. The ubiquitous taxis are also a good

way of getting from point to point - especially when in a hurry. The famous

black London taxis (unique to Britain) can be hailed in the street or from a

taxi rank, or taxis that utilize regular vehicles (known as mini-cabs) can be

ordered by telephone.

The Tower of London - Crown Jewels - Part 1

The Crown Jewels and the Tower Ravens, which

are described elsewhere in this article.

The Wall Walk, which runs along the Tower's eastern inner curtain wall that was

built early in the 13th Century.

Crown Jewels Keith Hanson is Chief Exhibitor of the Crown Jewels, having been

appointed to that post in 2000 after serving as a Yeoman Warder. Hanson, who

lives at the Tower with his wife Angela, is the latest in a long line of

Englishman who have watched over the royal Regalia since the Crown Jewels were

first displayed to the public at the Tower of London in 1661 (and possibly

earlier).

The Millenium Wheel:

One of London's newest and most successful attractions is the London Eye - also

known as the Millenium Wheel. This giant observation wheel (similar to a Ferris

wheel) is the world's largest and was built by a consortium including British

Airways to mark the millenium. Unlike the unfortunate Millenium Dome, the London

Eye has been a huge success.

It is necessary to book ahead as early as possible

to ensure a place at the time required. The Eye is located on the south bank of

the Thames, across the river from Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

The

wheel reaches a height of 135 metres and consists of 32 capsules that each holds

25 passengers; the ride takes 30 minutes. The capsules are clear and afford a

heart-stopping view for miles around. This is an attraction that will excite

even the most jaded visitor, and of course being new offers something to

visitors who have experienced London before.

The North of England - Part 16

On a totally non-historical note, and yet perhaps Chester s most appealing

attraction is the wonderful Chester Zoo considered by many to be Britain s

finest and one of the largest. Chester Zoo has a lovely park like setting, with

meticulously groomed gardens consisting of over 110 acres of simultaneously

blooming flowers, and unusual shrubs and trees.

Great care is given to ensure

that the animals are kept in an environment as close to their natural one as

possible. Chester Zoo is a leader in conservation and is noted for its fine

collection of primates the best in Europe.

There is a monorail and a waterbus that navigates the many streams and lakes of

the zoo. These provide novel ways of seeing the animals up close. The zoo has

many hands on experiences available for visitors that are very educational. A

good selection of restaurants and eateries are here, helping making Chester Zoo

a very suitable place to spend a half or even a full day.

London - Part 10

The port of London is long gone, Tilbury in Essex is quite a way down the Thames

and is where ships that serve London sail. It is the usual terminus for cruise

ships visiting London as part of their itinerary.

Train services from the rest of England, Scotland and Wales are frequent and

most British communities have or are within relatively short distance to a train

station. With the advent of the Channel Tunnel there is direct train service

from European cities to London. London has many main line stations, each serving

a different part of the country.

London is also served by an excellent network of buses (known as coaches) from

throughout the U.K. There are also through coach services from the continent and

the Republic of Ireland to London. Nearly all of these coaches arrive at

London's Victoria Coach Station.

The People - manners and humor

Visitors will be impressed by the politeness of the local people. Pushing,

shoving or otherwise 'making a scene' is a rare occurrence. The lineup or queue

is almost sacred; to push in a queue is a cardinal sin which will not go without

rebuke.

Another grave faux-pas is for two people to stand together on one step

of an escalator. One side of the escalator must always be kept clear to allow

those people craving exercise or who are in a hurry to pass. Londoners are not

known for engaging in friendly conversation with strangers, however are nearly

always willing to help, and will take great pains to do so.
