coastal Calfornia -

"Pack your hiking boots, swimsuit, and sense of adventure! This trip combines two diverse but equally dramatic environments -- the magnificent coastal redwood forest and the beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline. We'll start by exploring the redwood-filled gorges of Big Basin State Park, where we'll camp near an idyllic meadow and take day hikes to creeks, waterfalls, and hilltops. Then it's off to the coast, where we'll frolic on a sandy beach, explore tidepools brimming with sea life, and sleep under a historic lighthouse overlooking the Pacific Ocean."

Sounds From Nature: Laura Veirs -
From: NewsTrove.com

"Like the stark yet fresh landscapes of America's Pacific Northwest, Laura Veirs' art is both primitive and urbane. Her music and paintings are as much at home in the barn on her farm as in the cultivated venues of Seattle. One can imagine her voice haunting the forests that surround her. Her songs, as well as her paintings and drawings, are often literally dark. Her voice can be shivering and fragile. Yet when she speaks to you, she sounds more like a friendly teenager than a soul-searching adult; full of enthusiasm for the future."

Yet another bunny -

" Another one of those things that really needs to be finished. Everyone in the icon except Sveta and Mika. This, frankly, needs the hand of a far more smutty writer than I.Title: Strip PokerAuthor: CGRating:A/N: After having read this quote on the Storm boards, I knew that I had to write this fic. It just seemed so perfect. I mean, for God's sake, how can you not slash it?Disclaimer/Legalese: Never happened. If it could have, I'm sorry I missed it. The poker set is real and belongs to my mom and dad. Various information about outdoor activities is garnered from real sources.Summary: When the cards are dealt, all bets are off.It all started in Seattle, before the Liberty came to grips with reality and put Becky on the injured list. Being a woman, no matter her profession, she sought out someone she could talk to about the situation she was in. As fate would have it, Adia of the Storm had also suffered a torn ACL, only a few days after Becky's injury. So as the teams warmed up, the two women discussed various aspects of their forced inactivity and their rehab. Somewhere in the middle of the conversation, Adia happened to mention that she was afraid that if she had to keep wearing the knee brace, it would throw off her balance when she was on her skateboard."You skate?""Why else would I be worried about my skateboard? Peroxide must be getting to your head. Don't worry, the same thing happens to Lauren."Becky flushed. "You make a good point about the board, though not the peroxide. It's just that you don't look particularly adventurous.""I grew up pretty much on the water, so I got into a lot of that stuff- went to Australia a few years ago for whitewater rafting and other such stuff. But I couldn't spend all my time in the water, and I found that I liked using my body, so I got into more landbound activities.""Nice," Becky said appreciatively. "I didn't get into as much of the water stuff, but then I grew up inland. Learned to handle a gun, set up camp, useful things like that.""Sounds interesting, if kinda gross. Maybe we could hang out sometime, combine our skills. You can teach me how to use a gun, I can teach you to raft, or maybe a couple of karate moves."Becky moved closer, frowning, and whispered, "If you're trying to hit on me, Crys will put aside Southern manners and kill you."Adia blinked. "If I were hitting on you, Simone would laugh at me. Of course, then she'd kill me.""Oh, okay. I thought-""So did I..."Becky realized the source of the confusion and gestured out towards the court. "That's Crys," she specified, pointing at Crystal."Oh. Hey, we have something else in common. That's pretty cool- what're the odds?""Dunno." Becky started thinking. "Hey, I'm getting an idea. Do you play poker?""Only the best kind.""The kind where someone ends up naked, right?""That sounds like the best kind to me.""I say we run through the grapevine, see how many interracial or ACL-stricken couples we can find in this league. Maybe after the season we could have a game."Adia grinned. "I like that plan. I like the way you think. I've got a phone tree the size of a redwood, so I should be able to find someone. If I can't, I hope you can."They shook on it, sealing the deal. The next month and change were spent using the resources of two teams to find more couples for the game. Becky and Crystal struck first, as Crystal convinced Tari to use her limited National Team connections, thus finding Catch and Schuey. Catch was thrilled with the idea and immediately offered to bring the refreshments. This swift offer made Crystal nervous, but she acceded anyway, since she had no concrete reason for refual. When Adia heard the news, she redoubled her efforts to find more people for the game; it wasn't that they couldn't play poker with six people, but she felt strangely inadequate. She at last managed to get through to an old teammate in Minnesota, one who hadn't been available the last two times she had tried to call. Katie listened to Adia's request, then beckoned Sveta to the phone. "Interracial or with a bad knee? I know one pair that has both. Shea, my former classmate, has a black girlfriend, Swin. I can call Shea at her work for you if you wish."Adia nodded, then realized that she was on the phone and Sveta couldn't see the gesture. "Okay. The way things are shaking out, that means we'll have to push the game further back, since Detroit seems to be the only team involved in this that's actually going to the playoffs. Damn Monarchs. They've lost all sense of good taste.""You only say that because they gave you to us," Katie laughed, having reclaimed the receiver from Sveta. "And now I suppose you'll say we have no taste either, for trading you, or Phoenix, or Cleveland- that Seattle is the only team in this league that has good taste- the team that *happens* to have you on its roster.""Oh, come on, Katie- do you really think I'd say that?""Yes.""Shut up.""Make me.""Your girlfriend will break me into tiny pieces if I try.""You make an excellent point." Katie laughed. "We need to have more conversations like this.""No, I don't think we do." Adia likewise laughed, then hung up. Simone sidled up to her, put strong dark hands on Adia's shoulders, and revealed a bright smile. Adia looked up. "All is in readiness. All we need is a date."They got a date. Then they had to get another one. Then they had to get another one as Detroit kept advancing through the playoffs. The game was scheduled for the second day after the last game of any player's season, but Detroit was taking its sweet time finishing off. When the Finals went to a third game, the other seven participants were only relieved because it meant that the Sparks would not win, especially Adia; she harbored an irrational resentment of Los Angeles because that was the game in which she had torn her ACL. She knew that no Spark was to blame, but that didn't stop her from despising the team. And when game 3 ended with a Shock victory, there was much dancing in glee. Adia and Becky, by now the coordinators of this event, called to double-check that all players would be able to meet in Adia's offseason home in San Diego; this had been the chosen place because it was always good to have an excuse to get to San Diego. Swin asked for another day to take care of various WNBA championship matters, and it was granted; the rest of the group arranged for flights from wherever they were and waited for the three days to pass.On the third day, Adia paced the length of the hall for a while, but her anxiety gave way to a throbbing ache in her right knee; she was forced to take a seat and drum her fingers on the arm of the chair to help ease her nerves. Simone took over pacing duties, stopping every so often to stroke Adia's hair in a futile attempt to calm her- how could the gesture do any good when Simone's fingers were shaking? It was dangerous revealing their relationship, even to others who were in the same boat as they. Before, one misspoken word could only have betrayed the two of them, and only two of them could speak that word; now there were six others whose confidences were theirs and whose confidence they were in. Any casual mention of a friendship might reveal how it came to be.The doorbell rang. Adia jumped from her chair, stifling a curse as too much weight fell on her injured leg. Simone gently pushed her down, then went to take care of the door. Becky looked up and said, "Hey. You're Simone, right?""Yeah. Do I get bonus points for guessing that you're Becky and she's Crystal?""Didn't think we were givin' points. Poker chips, maybe, an' I brought the lot of 'em." Crystal brandished a small leather-bound case with a stripe down the center and two latches on its top. "The chips and a coupla decks of cards... didn't know if y'all would have supplies or not, but these are real nice.""Thanks. I know we have cards, but I didn't know if we had chips. The more the merrier anyway." Simone leaned back and called, "'Dia, your partner in crime is here!""Yes, but who's at the door?""I see you guys have the same kind of odd rapport as we do," Becky remarked, entering the dining room where Adia sat waiting. The plain table sat bare of all but coasters at each place, a notepad to keep score, and a Storm pencil that was sharpened to a needle point. "I also see that you like being prepared as much as I do.""As soon as the last couple comes through that door and gets settled at the table, I want to start playing. Or at least setting the rules so that we can play as soon as possible. After all, I hear interesting rumors that there's more than one way to play strip poker, and I'd rather find the kind of rules that get the most people naked in the most logical fashion.""Logic and nudity. Two words that I don't think I've ever heard together," Simone commented, a smile playing around the corners of her mouth; then again, the expression never seemed far from her face."Can I offer you two a drink? I don't have very much- haven't done a lot of shopping and you said that someone was going to bring the refreshments- but I'd like to get you two as comfortable as possible.""I'm assuming you have water, of course. I wouldn't mind that." Crystal nodded her agreement with Becky's suggestion. Before Adia could even think about moving, Simone anticipated her and momentarily disappeared into the kitchen. She came back with four glasses of ice water on a wooden tray. Adia stuck her tongue out at Simone, but took the proffered glass anyway. They talked of inconsequential things, gossip and rumor and hearsay, before the bell rang again. Simone rolled her eyes in mock frustration at this turn of events as she went to answer the door. A few pleasantries later, Catch and Schuey were escorted into the dining room for the purposes of conversation. Adia raised an eyebrow, not having heard the identities of the couple that Becky and Crystal had contacted; she had only heard that they'd found someone else to join the game. And in turn, Adia had only revealed that one of the other players was from the Shock; she had had to reveal that much because of the constant delays of the game.Catch plopped a large Tupperware container on the table. "Schuey and I made cookies," she declared proudly. "And we even managed to make a pie. It took a lot. We had to try a couple of times before we finally got it to work.""It wouldn't have taken so long if you had worn your sports bra while baking," Schuey said cryptically. In her hands were plastic bags from the local market. "I have the drinks. I bought Coke, juice, and four six-packs. God forbid I didn't buy enough beer for everyone to have an equal share. Can I go put this in the fridge? Not for nothing, but the handles are cutting into my hands."Adia pointed in the general direction of the kitchen, and Schuey found space in the refrigerator. When she returned to the dining room, she had a can of Coke in each hand. She handed one to Catch, then popped the tab on the other, the metallic click surprising the lot of them. "I warn you, we UConn girls are well trained in the arts of mischief, so expect me to help Catch to clean you out and leave you shivering.""It's not that cold, Kelly. I doubt we'll be shivering, even on the off chance that you actually win some clothes off us," Becky replied confidently. She was seated, but she gave off the impression of swaggering nonetheless."Them's fighting words, gimp," Catch declared with a wry smile; she knew that she was one of the two people in that room who could possibly get away with the friendly insult. Even with the note of mischief in Catch's voice, Becky briefly showed a flash of anger before calming herself. Catch became aware of how close she had come to danger. Instinctively, she took Schuey's hand. Schuey was startled by the contact, but automatically twined her fingers with Catch's. They shared a smile, glad that they could actually reveal their feelings in this company. They had been too long in the company of too many mothers and too many conservatives in Indiana, and it was a blessed relief to be with those who understood them. The doorbell rang one last time, momentarily disrupting Catch and Schuey's rapport. "That should be our last set," Adia murmured. Simone nodded, then went to answer the door. Shea and Swin followed her into the dining room. "You're not one I would have expected to see here," Swin said candidly to Becky. "I didn't know you liked girls.""I don't like girls. I like Crystal. There's a difference. So stop trying to look down my shirt."Swin and Crystal both flushed, but for different reasons. Shea glowered at Becky; both blondes flexed their fingers as if preparing to rend each other's flesh with their fingernails, or perhaps in Becky's case preparing to fire a gun. Catch sensed the animosity and quickly opened the Tupperware. The scent of chocolate chip cookies overwhelmed them all, drowning out thoughts of revenge for sullied honor. Schuey found a small pile of napkins and helped Catch dole out the cure for irrational rage. Pleased noises followed until Adia brought up a major matter for consideration. "Does anyone have any suggestions on what rules we should use? I submit that while draw poker might cause less nakedness, stud would make too many people naked too fast, and that's no fun.""And we should also figure out how much nakedness there should be per turn. We don't want it to go by too quickly." Becky frowned, tapping her fingernails against the arm of the chair."Why worry about that? We can always play another game if too many people get too naked too quickly," Swin pointed out. "
