"ELKO - Elko Convention and Visitors Authority has agreed to be a co-sponsor of the Elko Area Chamber of Commerce's Home & Business Expo May 7-8. The board voted this week to contribute $5,000, and chamber Chief Executive Officer Neil McQueary said the chamber will promote ECVA as a co-sponsor of the event that will be held at the Elko Convention Center. He also told the board at its meeting this week the chamber is planning a survey at the show that would include questions to promote enticing conventions to Elko. A survey at last year's show centered on why people shop out of town, and "we'll do it again," McQueary said."

Surgical Sex by Paul McHugh -

"When the practice of sex-change surgery first emerged back in the early 1970s, I would often remind its advocating psychiatrists that with other patients, alcoholics in particular, they would quote the Serenity Prayer, "God, give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Where did they get the idea that our sexual identity ("gender" was the term they preferred) as men or women was in the category of things that could be changed? Their regular response was to show me their patients."

"As the sequel to box office hit “Get Shorty” opens across the country this weekend and Walt Disney releases the newest edition to its live-action family, it simply seems that everyone is looking for the next big hit. The Pacifier PG, 91 min. Navy SEAL Shane Wolfe (Vin Diesel), after failing to protect top government scientist Howard Plummer (Tate Donovan), feels disgraced and lost. Wanting nothing more than to get back out in the field and redeem himself, he is horrified when his superiors give him the assignment of protecting the family of the deceased scientist he had failed to protect."

This is for you Karen. I finally answered them. -

" 1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed. 2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions. 3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers. 4 - You'll include this explanation. 5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed. The Answers1) Why do you love to travel so much? I love to travel for many reasons. The surface reason is that I have a sense of adventure. Always have and always will. I like to see other cultures and ways of life. I like meeting new people. However, I think there is a deeper issue. My family is spread all over the U.S., so I've always had to travel around to see them. Also, when I was younger and my mom couldn't afford daycare/a babysitter for the whole summer, I spent time traveling around. I would go with friends of the family and family for a week here and then two parties would meet at a predetermined place and trade me off. It was pretty cool and I ended up spending my childhood on a road trip to Cali, in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Canada. And I suppose the whole moving-around-all-the -time thing, in its own way, contributed to my perpetual restlessness.2) Where do you think you'll live when you "settle down?" I have no idea. Defintely not Wisconsin. I guess it depends on what I end up doing with my life. I'm currently double majoring in biology and southeast asian studies, with Vietnamese being my language of choice for the asia major. After spending some time teaching english in Vietnam and consequently travelling the world for a year with my funds, I would like to go to graduate school for coral reef ecology. Ideally, from this point onward I would be able to do something that combined my two intersts . . .say coral reefs in southeast asia. I just know I want to live near the water, near the beach, or on a boat. But I honestly don't know if I'll fully "settle down" if I do get into research . . . who knows. I'm also on an FBI kick right now, so that's another thing in the mixture. 3) What were the best and worst parts of living in Alaska? I was in Alaska in the summer, so there weren't that many negatives. I was in Seward, which is a temperate rainforest so it usually rained a little bit every day and the temperature didn't get much above 70, but that was all right. I just wore pants. However, the interior gets a lot warmer. The best part was the outdoors. There is always something to do without having to go through too much effort to do so. There was this glacier that you could walk up to. It was about an 8 mile bike ride away and it was absolutely beautiful. And at this glacier there is a 7 hour hiking trail that you can do. This trail goes up to the Harding Ice Field, which covers most of the peninsula. Apparently, if one were to walk across this field, one would end up on the other side of the peninsula. I never did finish the trail. We got halfway and had to turn back because of the weather. Also, there was this mountain that we climbed (and I subsequently fell down). Sea kayaking was awesome, the whales (and other random and spontaneous wildlife) were great. I worked a summer job with a bunch of people who just worked random seasonal jobs and they were awesome people. Anchorage seems like it has some underlying problems, which is too bad, but on the whole Alaska is wonderful. You really should go. Whitewater rafting in Denali is absolutely fabulous as well. Oh yeah, one more annoying thing: uber-wealthy tourists who rode up on the cruise ships. So irritating. And fresh seafood is good. I'm confessing a secret here: i'm vegetarian, but we went to eat at this restaurant that didn't have anything that wasn't seafood (fresh daily). Even the salad had stuff. So I gave in and had shrimp. It was delicious. But thats the only time I've made the concession and I have to say it was worth it.4) From one musician/scientist/world traveler to another, do you think you'll ever find one career that satisfies all your intellectual needs? If so, what would it be? I hope so. If and when I get my PhD in coral reef ecology, I would ideally do something that could combine my Southeast Asian interest with that. I've toyed with the idea of setting up some sort of "save the coral reefs" foundation type of thing in Vietnam. And headquarters would also be a guesthouse/hostel with scuba diving tours done. I would have my reefs and research, my travel aspect, and adventure. However, that is just a fantasy. I don't know how practical it actually is. I've also been thinking about the FBI a bit. I would get to use language skills, but who knows. I would have to give up the ocean, unless I could swing getting placed in Hawaii. I always said I never wanted to be a medical doctor, but now I'm thinking I might take the MCATs for my own amusement on the off-chance that I want to go to med school when I get back from being abroad. If I went the whole M.D. route, I would like to do something working with immigrant communities, where again my foreign experiences could be put to use. In short, I doubt I'll find everything to fit my needs. Something will have to be sacrificed and that makes me sad inside. 5) Do you think life exists elsewhere in the universe? If yes, do you think human beings will ever discover it and/or communicate with it?The Truth Is Out There. Yes, I do believe life exists elsewhere in the universe. The universe is unimaginably huge and to think that the human race and all the organisms of earth are the only life out there is a view as ridiculous as that of people who thought the world was flat. Haven't they found martian bacteria? That guarantees that there is life elsewhere. I would guess that the other lifeforms probably don't resemble that which we are familiar with as different places have different conditions and life would have evolved differently. For instance, a world could be hot and sulfur based and there would be a bunch a lifeforms adapted to that. On Earth we have lifeforms that live in the deep hydrothermal vents. We don't have a lot of life adapted to those situations, but we don't have a lot of those environments either. Our world is the the "yay oxygen" world it is because that is what abounds here. However life elsewehere will be adapted to their conditions. I think eventually human beings will discover and communicate with other life, but most assuredly not in our lifetime. Or even the lives of our near dependents. People still have a fear of the unknown and I think contact with alien lifeforms would definitely fall into this category. Though if people are to be believed, alien beings have already been here and are attempting to contact us. Thats actually how it would probably turn out. We get contacted, but there would be widespread panic so its covered up until people can eventually accept it in many many many generations. Though, the way things are going, maybe Earth is the galactic/universe leper colony. All the "rejects" get sent here and the higher beings are just biding their time until we self-destruct ourselves, oblivious to how unimportant we really are.And now its off to a uTA meeting. I hope I get to do it! It would be awesome. "

" Still feeling weird... maybe there is something in the air? Maybe its because the guy across the hall hasn't been here all day and I'm getting things done? I don't know - it's just ... weird...Also found out that the Sister-in-law is gate crashing the apartment tomorrow morning at 9:00am ... so she and the Doctor can use two computers and two cell phones in an attempt to secure Tori Amos tickets for 4/12.... WHEN SHE ALREADY HAS TICKETS FOR THE 4/10 CONCERT!!!*sigh* Can't I just sleep in 1 day this year?*sniff, sob, sniff*On a lighter note - it looks like we're attempting to go Whitewater Rafting again this year. Info TBD - but hopefully we'll have a blast this year - and I'll have learned from my mistake and LOOSEN the life jacket as to breathe, and NOT wear a second layer underneath the wet suit.... Last year I made everyone miserable until I removed the long undershirt and started breathing again... Oh well... Let's look forward to something shall we ;) "
