"North America's bobwhite quail population declined from 59 million birds
in 1980 to about 20 million in 1999. In August, President George W. Bush announced
a new initiative to reverse this trend by creating 250,000 acres of bobwhite
habitat.
This new initiative is called Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds (HBUB). It encourages
landowners to create buffers of native warm-season grasses, legumes, wildflowers,
forbs and shrubs along agricultural field borders.
Thirty-five states are included in the plan. Missouri is one of only five states
eligible to receive funding for the maximum of 20,000 acres."

"Her father handed her his camera and instructions on how to use it. And as Secretariat posed for the camera, Garcia discovered a new interest.
"I just started snapping pictures of Secretariat and fell in love with it," she said. "I just loved the snap of the camera, click, click, click."
A Columbus native, Garcia graduated from Ohio State University, an animal science major with an equine emphasis.
"There aren't a lot of big horse farms around here," she said laughing.
Although she decided against veterinary school, these days her love of animals is more than just a hobby. She's made it a business: Cindy Garcia Portraits."

"But during the holiday season, Harlingen Humane Society officials said puppies and kittens are also poor Christmas gifts if given incorrectly.
"We're going to see a lot of animals come through here immediately after the holidays," said Jackie Byrd, who has been involved with the humane society for more than eight years. "Pets are for life, not for the holidays."
Byrd said many pets given as surprise gifts are often discarded by their owners.
"There are many reasons," she said. "The two most common are they got a pet and they just didn't want one, or it didn't fit their lifestyle."

"Dogs are welcome at these holiday resorts
Many hotels and motels accept dogs for overnight stays, but the accompanying rules and regulations can be disconcerting if not completely impossible. So where do we go when we want a holiday with our dog and not feel like second-class citizens? Dogs, Dogs, Dogs! presents our 4th Annual "Get Outta Town" listing of resorts who report that they welcome dogs, enjoy dogs, and understand the needs of dogs and owners.
Notes:
- Individual rules apply for each resort such as additional fees for pets and number of pets per family."

"From 5 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., individuals and companies called in their financial donations to a phone bank at Local 2.
"It was pretty much unprecedented in our fund-raising activities in the Greater Houston area. We've never tried a telethon of that magnitude," said Davis Henderson, the CEO of the Houston-area Red Cross.
Corporate donations totaled $285,000.
"Because of this support, we'll be able to continue with our assistance to fire victims, be able to continue our transportation program, be able to continue to assist travelers in crisis," Henderson said."

"The problem stems from a 20 percent increase in the cost of transportation services and a 20 percent increase in the number of fires, according to authorities.
Plus, less money is coming in.
"The number of donors is down, as is the amount of the donations. It's been going down for the past three years," Henderson said.
He said that means cuts in two key areas.
The senior shuttle in Pasadena will be eliminated and the average amount given to fire victims has been reduced as well.
"A family of five, which would normally get $1,500, will get $800," Henderson said."
