"I thought dogs were colorblind.
When I appeared as Santa Claus at the Pet Warehouse in north Springfield last week, I figured the dogs wouldn't know whether I was a jolly old elf or the Jolly Green Giant.
But most of the animals greeted me with all the excitement and glee of a small child - but in their own way - by shaking like an electric paint-can mixer, jumping up and down on the floor or licking away at my beard.
I guess dogs love Santa, too."

"Donations for dogs
By Jennifer Fusco / Special to The Citizen
With more than 500 pounds of donated dog and cat food, this year the animals at the SPCA will be rockin' around the Christmas tree.
Cayuga Community College's business department chose to sponsor Auburn's SPCA for its holiday charity, with coordinator Penny Herrling spearheading the project.
Herrling, a senior accountant and clerk, wanted to make locals aware of overcrowding and the diminishing food supply at the SPCA.
"It's always something I've wanted to do," Herrling said. "We did very well gathering supplies, and you know it's going to a great cause."

"Herrling, along with other colleagues in CCC's business office, began collecting food and supplies - ranging from grooming tools to toys - for the SPCA the second week in November.
The project involved only staff from CCC, and according to Herrling, most who participated were animal lovers.
"If you want to make a big dent, you have got to have help, and I had great support," Herrling said.
Nancy Decker, a CCC staff member, aided in Herrling's quest for animal success.
"We wanted to do a worthy cause, and how much worthier can you get than animals?" Decker said.
"That's unconditional love."

"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two-year-old Tyson toddles out of a white stretch limousine at 10:30 a.m., eager to join his buddies at day-care. But he is no baby headed for a tony Manhattan nursery school -- he's a bulldog.
Tyson is one of about 10 dogs being chauffeured from their homes to day-care by Alice Moss, who runs a New York dog grooming, day-care and boarding business. Her operation has grown from five canine clients 12 years ago to around 50 today.
Americans are pampering their pets more than ever."
The changing face of hunger -

"Contrary to what politicians running for re-election assured Minnesotans in the run-up to last month's elections, the state of Minnesota's economy is not sound. This admission after the election that the state has a $700 million budget deficit, coupled with "no new taxes" pledges and the inevitable round of cutbacks, virtually guarantees that more Minnesotans will fall through the cracks in the social safety net as more services and programs undergo the budgetary axe.
Since prosperity has been on the decline, hunger in Minnesota has been on the rise."
