"A series of outbreaks in Florida last year that was topped by the 100-plus cases linked to the petting zoo at last year's fair in Raleigh got the attention of officials, the public and lawmakers. North Carolina joined Pennsylvania and Oregon (which suffered a major E. coli petting-zoo outbreak at a county fair in 2002) as the first states to create guidelines for petting-zoo sanitation and safety.
At the North Carolina State Fair this fall, new hand-washing stations have been set up at the petting zoo near Gate 5 and around other animal exhibits."

"He's swum across five Great Lakes and has set 13 world records. Pretty good for someone who nearly drowned when he was three years old, and, as a result, developed a lifelong fear of swimming. But if you knew the man, it's nothing more than what you'd come to expect from Michigan's own Jim Dreyer.
Most people who live in the Great Lakes state know just how challenging those lakes can be. Beautiful, yes - but they're also rife with riptides and currents, temperature changes, and of course, their vastness."

Lawsuits filed against Atlanta-based Spectrum, which also makes other consumer products, claim the company overstated market demand for batteries and its success in acquiring two companies earlier this year.
In the months before the stock's value began a downward slide in July, top company executives sold off $4 million in their personal stock, the lawsuits allege."
