"Iceboating offers plenty of thrills and chills, but it is mainly speed that attracts Scouts, Venturers, and Sea Scouts to this annual winter's day of "hard-water sailing."
From Dutch Boats to The Detroit News
Sailing in the Ice Belt
Eleven-year-old Mitchell Aase held on for dear life as the 43-foot-long iceboat - resembling a giant preying mantis on ice skates - screamed across frozen Lake Geneva.
The fire-engine-red boat, named the Fritz, nimbly turned when it reached the far shore, then flew 45 miles per hour back across the lake before slowing to a stop as it approached a group of Scouts and Venturers."

"Pass it On
"Daddeee!" Kaeo was impatient and his voice was taking on that whiny nails-on-a-chalkboard quality. This time, though, it just made me smile. "When are we going?" he asked. "Look, the party's already started!"
The hook was barely down and it was hotter than a steam pot at a crab feast, but with the fine breeze blowing across the West River, a nice patch of shade beneath the awning and a swim in the offing, we'd cool off soon enough. The prospect of dinghying into the sweltering shore, actually, wasn't too appealing. But Kaeo was not to be denied. "Do you think there will be cotton candy again? Will Kyle be there?"

"After the death
of Charles II of Spain in 1700, Philip V, grandson of King Louis XIV of France,
was named to succeed him. Louis refused to keep his grandson from the line of
succession to the French throne, which prompted fears of expansion. These actions
led to the War of the Spanish Succession, which moved into America in 1702,
where it was known as Queen Anne's War. The conflict, which lasted from 1702
to 1713, pitted France and Spain against England, Austria, the Netherlands,
and Portugal."

"Coastweek - -
There was sudden change from strong gusty winds, which has been blowing for the past one month, to very light steady breeze on Wednesday, the 7th, in the first race of 2004 JANUARY MONTHLY MUG sailed on 'B' personal handicap by three boats, reports SEA BREEZE.
The only Osprey METEORITE, sailed by Kalim Hassanali and Annie Appleyard, the later not requiring to hike out on the trapeze due to light winds, had line honours finish and in 1st position on corrected time.
It was good to see Toppers sailing in the race, but that day, after a few minutes late on the start and with small sails and very light winds, they sailed slow."

"A senior at C.V. Bethel high school, 16-year-old Stephano Kemp is a trainee of legendary sailor "King" Eric Gibson.
Kemp played an integral role on Gibson's Bergitte, which placed third in the C-class race in the opening day of the New Year's Regatta on Montagu Beach.
After Kemp's successful sailing debut on the Bergitte, Gibson said the future of sailing looks very promising, as most of his crew were under 18.
"I was not on the boat when they sailed because I wanted them to have a chance at sailing and take some responsibility for the boat. The fact that they finished in style is very good and it was a thrilling experience."

"Two Big-Hearted Rivers
The town of Occoquan benefited from the rush and play of its namesake river, becoming a prime spot for manufacturing mills. In contrast, just across the Potomac River, Mattawoman Creek flows flat as a flounder through marshes as thick as any on the Tidewater. Senior editor Wendy Mitman Clarke soaks up the history and the scenery on a cruise through these upland tributaries.
A Race Against Chaos
You'd think that after doing it for nine years, it would become old hat. Not so, say the volunteers in charge of the annual Santa Maria Cup in Annapolis. Every year, it gets bigger and better."

"On Board: San Juan 48
A superbly equipped build for a discriminating yachtsman
By Scott Shane
When I spoke with San Juan Composites founders Donald Campbell and Randy Purdy via cell phone, they were in a post-Hurricane Isabel mess, making their way west at 25 knots through Long Island Sound aboard the company's first 48-footer. The 20-knot northeast following wind and outgoing current against them created some real slop.
It didn't stop the San Juan 48 from gliding into Port Washington Harbor, New York, a few hours after our phone call."
On Board: Tiara Sovran 3600 -
From: www.yachtingnet.com

"The U.S. has many great production boatbuilders, however, if I had to choose one that reflects the heart of America's sense of design and style on the water, it would probably be Tiara Yachts. The builder's latest model, the Sovran 3600, proves it knows what it's doing.
Though she is somewhat conservative by European standards, her lines can be traced to a theme that has pleased American yachtsmen for five decades. Compared with past Tiara products, she is smoother, softer and more graceful. While she is built on a platform of proven features, it is blended with a long list of subtle improvements that are both attractive and practical."
