Serious Business
By Andy Hall
The Palatka Daily News
To much of Palatka and Putnam County, the Mug Race is a nice Saturday morning in May to watch hundreds of sailboats, admiring the colorful craft and enjoying the springtime weather until the last of the boats skippered mostly by agreeable out-of-towners who party hard the night before vanish from the horizon off Memorial Bridge.
Weren't they pretty? Well, it's over. Come back next year, and bring your money.
To an extent, the perception matches reality."

"Two Florida men have been charged with stealing a rare luxury yacht earlier this year and sailing it to a marina in the Bahamas.
Kevin James Simmons, 23, and Jeremiah Wayne Green, 24, both from Jacksonville, Fla., were charged Thursday morning in federal court with transporting stolen property and engaging in unlawful foreign commerce. The men, who pleaded not guilty, could face a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. They returned to Florida after being released on $25,000 bail.
The yacht they are accused of stealing disappeared from Charleston's City Marina in the middle of the night on Jan. 7."

"Two
inshore races were held today for division A,
while division B boats had one race albeit with
the course taking them off out to sea and the
big swells. Spinnakers shredded, mainsails blew
and deck hardware popped in winds that although
strong were shifty as they swirled off the shore.
After the first race in division A, there was
a steady stream of boats heading back to Falmouth
Harbour for repairs. One was Atalanta II, the
fresh out of the box Farr 70 with Jim Brady on
main trim and sharing tactics with Mumm 30 world
champion Luca Santella."

"With
the Olympic Games in Athens less than four months
away, a lot of people who hoped to be there now
know they won't be, but Gary Jobson still has
it in his date book. In indelible ink.
He
had to cancel a speaking appearance at the Long
Beach Yacht Club a little over a year ago. It
was the day after he learned the reason he always
felt so tired wasn't because he was working so
hard as the world's top TV sailing commentator
but because he had lymphoma."

"Look out for a friendly invasion, chivalrous gents, a Maypole revival, chance to sail, and the return of some other trains over the holiday weekend.

"Once upon a time, yachting was a strenuous undertaking. Yachts of yore were luxurious, but they lacked creature comforts. Entertainment options, in particular, were limited mostly to sunbathing, fine dining and conversing over cigars and cordials.
These days, yachters take almost as much pride in their onboard diversions—known in the trade as “toys”—as they do in the boats themselves. The toys might include Jet Skis, kayaks, scuba gear, spas and, on most newer boats more than 75 feet long, substantial home theater and multiroom audio systems."

"The Galapagos Islands bring to mind Charles
Darwin's visit as a naturalist on the HMS Beagle in the 1830s. The islands'
biological diversity formed the basis for his definitive work The
Origin of Species, published 24 years after his visit. Today
visitors from all over the world come to the islands to see the wide
array of exotic birds, plants and animals made famous by Darwin.
It's long been a dream of mine to visit
the Galapagos — an environment essentially as pristine as it was
in Darwin's time."
