" I reluctantly did not buy a fig tree. I regret, once again, giving away my fig tree. Originally I was going to reclaim it if I was back within a year, but it did so poorly being wedged through the apartment and downstairs that I urged the "caretakers"/new owners to put it in the ground right away. I did contact them to see how it was doing when I returned, and they offered it back, but it didn't feel right. I guess I will buy figs this summer...between $20 for the sapling, $25 for the pot, $15 for the rolling thingy to put under the pot, since I know we'd need to move it, and the 4 - 5 cubic feet of potting soil for the pot @ $2.79/ft3, well, let's just say that even at $4.99 for those silly little pint things I can buy a LOT of figs this summer. I should poke around and see if I can find again the huge fig tree I found while I was walking one day in Sunnyvale. I also have at least one friend who doesn't like figs and has (or had, last summer) a fig tree in his yard.

Lest you read my sad tale and think that I somehow avoided spending any money at garden stores today, let me hasten to reassure you that there are plants in my car. I'll let them overnight there, as it's slightly more protected than outside. Sure, they are hardened and all that, but I'll tackle it all in the morning. It will force me to get up early enough to get a couple of things done before brunch, since the condensation starts burning off the car at about 8am this time of year.

I couldn't resist the $10.99 rose special, and got two roses supposedly renowned for fragrance. The climber/rambler, Don Juan, is alleged to posses a "strong old-fashioned tea rose scent". It's a classic dark red rose. The bush rose is a pink/lavender called Serendip with a "sweet damask" scent. The climber will go in the ground on the back fence, since even if we move, I can't really take it with me when it's all spread out. The other will go in the large planter I bought with it. I've been enjoying brewing rose tea lately, and will try to harvest some buds off the DJ to dry and flavor my tea. A little goes quite a ways-- two or three thumb-sized buds will do a strong pot of tea. What I'm getting dried from Frontier might be R. gallica rather than R. Damascena however, so my mileage might vary considerably. I'd like to get some old-stock gallica, but that's another story.

Also got nasturtiums for the shady area next to the power meter enclosure, and a pair of cottage-garden type scented carnations, a pink and a white-with-blush. If my cosmos come back from the seeds I've saved, the cosmos and carnations will go well together in colors-- my cosmos were a magenta, pink, and white mix. Snagged a pair of primrose jumbo packs in the traditional mix of yellow, blue, and pink/magenta, 'cause cold-hardy color is a Good Thing. Speaking of which, I hope my dahlias come back. It's about time to put them out where they can start warming up during the day. The bulbs look sound, though the fact that I can see them means I should top off with potting soil. They did well all summer and into fall, with thick green leaves and consistent flowering. It helped that I pinched the heads when the blooms wilted, never let 'em go to seed.

Despite my lack of luck with the heirloom tomato plant last year (Boxcar Willie), I really wanted to try raising more heirloom veggies. I found "Renee's Seeds" in OSH, yay. They're all heirlooms selected for flavor, and they're all colorful mixes. Renee rocks, being Renee Shepherd, founder of Shepherd Seeds. Apparently she sold Shepherd Seeds off, and after a while she missed the fun part of the business (varietals, doing package art, etc) and got back into it. She signed a noncompete, so she can only sell through stores. Kind of like Steve Herrel, but in reverse. He founded the Steve's line of ice cream stores in the Boston area. When he got nostalgic for the ice cream biz, he opened a store (and then more stores) under the name Herrel's. But I digress.

If I'm careful, I should be able to save seed and get more bang for the buck-- Renee's packets retail for $2.49, ouch. I concentrated on things I know I'll grow, that I know HOW to grow, that are either spendy enough or yummy enough fresh that they're worth growing, and that we like to eat. I got tricolor pole beans, sugar snap peas, standard tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, romaine, leaf lettuce, mediterranean cucumber (likes the heat), tricolor zukes, and ummm...one more thing but they're out in the car, so I don't remember. Plus the obligatory peat pots. I got a little peat-pot incubator plastic thingy, and am going to try it vs peat-pots in foam egg carton slid into a cut 2-liter soda bottle (clear). Back in Boston I had a truly nifty device which made compressed soil blocks that stand on their own like peat pots. I think I "loaned" it to Wadlow, but after a decade-plus either he's using it and I should just get another one, or he's not and has no idea where it is. Oh well. Peat pots are pretty cheap, and if I do a lot more gardening I'll just get 'em in bulk instead of the $2.99/20-pack they sell at OSH.

I need to talk to [info]toxgunn and read my hydro books to find out how to start my lettuces so that I can try to grow them hydroponically this year. I suspect you can't start in peat and then move to rooting medium, unless you're using perlite in trays. I'm figuring on PVC tubes, and I seem to have a tube already, albeit not what I'd have planned exactly. Mike thought I might like to go clam digging and picked a clam-digging tube as one of the raffle prizes he won at the scuba club meeting on Wednesday. It's basically a 4-foot length of 12 - 15" diameter PVC pipe with rope handles-- you use it to shove down where the clam "bubbles" to keep it from digging away from you, since they dig diagonally. It seems like it might make a dandy lettuce planter, with drip tubing for spot-wetting the planting medium where the lettuces stick through the walls and a collection/recirculation system. Tubes that size or even larger were being used in just that way at "The Land" pavilion in Epcot Center. OK, they were on a huge roof-mounted chain hoist track that moved them around the enclosure and rotated them slowly to give all the plants a chance at the sun. We're not gonna get *that* fancy. Fortuitously, we purchased a 1.25" hole saw with a metal blade for a bus project earlier this year, and drip tubing kits are cheep.

ANYWAY...heavens that's a long posting, let me go back and cut-tag it. "

"Zambian Government has long recognised the economic importance of its wilderness and is acutely aware of environmental concerns: almost 90 percent of the country is given over to national parks and game reserves. Most tourism is concentrated in eight of the 19 parks Nsumbu, Kafue, Lochinvar, South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, North Luangwa, Kasanka, and Mosi oa-tunya, the remaining having fewer facilities."

"If it appears D.J. Morin has been scuba diving his whole life, it's because he pretty much has. Inspired by both the '50s Lloyd Bridges television show "Sea Hunt" and a scuba diving neighbor in Connecticut, Morin at just 14 started diving quarries, lakes and off of Long Island, N.Y. He continued diving during his 22 years in the Air Force before retiring to Merritt Island and in 1980 purchasing American Divers International, an island dive shop that has been around since the early '60s and is Central Brevard's hub of activity for divers and instruction."

"Yousef attended college in the United Kingdom. He studied electrical engineering there. Starting in the late 1980's, Yousef took spring break trips to Pakistan. In 1992, Yousef entered the United States with a false Iraqi passport. His partner, Ahmed Ajaj, who also had a false passport, was arrested on the spot after his passport was proven false and instructions for making bombs was found in his luggage. INS holding cells were overcrowded, so Yousef was told to come back in one month. He travelled around New York and New Jersey and called Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, a controversial Muslim preacher, via cell phone."
