Floating Hotels: CRUISE SHIP PASSENGER'S RIGHTS & REMEDIES

Modern Cruising Can Be A Wonderful Experience. But Please Don't Have An

Accident. Because You Will Then Discover That Your Rights As A Modern Consumer

Are Severely Limited By Ancient Legal Doctrines Which Favor Ship owners Over

Passengers

Modern cruise vessels are best viewed as floating hotels that transport their

guests from exotic port to exotic port where the passengers stay a few hours for

shopping, snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing and touring. The cruise industry

is growing rapidly with 6 million cruise passengers world wide in 1998, a 7.8%

increase from the year before2. The advertising for cruise vacations is

seductive, indeed, with ships now being built that exceed 100,000 tons and

accommodate over 3,000 passengers. The commitment of the cruise industry to the

future is extraordinary with $10.5 billion invested in the construction of 35

new " mega " ships for delivery by 2023.

AAA Cruise Vacation Info

For first time cruisers, the idea of what to expect can seem a bit daunting.

AAA Travel offers expert advice on how to chose a cruise that best fits your

personal taste, interests, and most importantly, your budget. If you've never

set sail, you'll discover a growing list of cruise ships and destinations to

satisfy your unique interests.

Almost like a floating resort, a cruise ship is more than just a method of

transportation to various ports -- it is a main attraction of the cruise

vacation experience. Cruising offers the benefit of unpacking only once even

though you will visit several ports.

Onboard, cruise guests will find a variety of dining options from traditional

continental cuisine to lighter, healthy fare. Food, and in some cases alcohol,

is included in the price of the cruise. Room accommodations, meals, health club

facilities, entertainment and a wide-variety of activities are also included.

Cruising offers the option to set your own pace; your trip can be as relaxing or

adventurous as you choose. Lounge by the pool, see a show, and even send the

kids to a babysitter to enjoy an adults-only romantic dinner while on board.

While docked, the activities offered during port calls are nearly limitless.

Shopping, hiking, city tours, snorkeling, swimming, helicopter rides and rafting

are just some of the possibilities for shore excursions designed to give you an

opportunity to explore points of interest in each port.

October is cruise sale month at AAA. Call your AAA travel agent for more

information and great deals.

AAA Chicago offers automotive, travel, insurance and financial services. It is

part of The Auto Club Group (ACG), the largest affiliation of AAA clubs in the

Midwest, with 4.1 million members in eight states. ACG clubs belong to the

national AAA federation, a not-for-profit organization, with more than 46

million members in the United States and Canada.

Seven Major Ports in Hawaii Cruise Ship Infrastructure

Consultants for the State Harbors Division (the firm of Leo A. Daly)

anticipate that passengers on foreign cruise ships visiting Hawaii could reach

100,000 by 2004, 200,000 by 2013, and as many as 340,000 by 2020. Coupled with

American Hawaii Cruises expectations, Hawaii could be hosting nearly 400,000

cruise passengers in 2005, before AHC's Independence and temporary foreign ship

are decommissioned. The level might drop to about 300,000 in 2006 but build

slowly back up to over 500,000 by 2020.

To accommodate this potential growth, the consultant report recommends about $54

million in a phase I improvement program for seven major ports in Hawaii from

now through 2004, and an additional $43 in improvements during a phase II

program from 2004 to 2020. Phase I improvements would include new terminal

facilities at Honolulu Harbor's Pier 2 and renovations and retrofits to Neighbor

Island ports. Phase II would make major improvements to the ports of Hilo,

Hawaii, Kahului, Maui, Port Allen, Kauai, and Piers 19/20 in Honolulu.

The report stressed that the improvements do not reflect an "if we build it,

they will come" strategy, but are rather a very selective set of investment

options designed to make the most productive and resource-conserving

improvements to stay competitive in this market. Nevertheless, the report

expects that either additional sources of revenues will be needed to fund the

improvements, or arrangements made for development of facilities by a third

party.

Cruise-Travel-Vacations:

Think Caribbean During the Winter Months - Part 1

A Healthy Cruise on Carnival's Ecstasy

Cruise Carnival's Smoke-free Paradise

The Caribbean's entire

eastern and southern part are just waiting to be discovered with exotic ports as

diverse as Montserrat, Puerto Rico and Bonaire. Take a look at the different

choices in this part of the Caribbean and figure out which exotic location

caters to what you are looking for on your next trip to sea.

American Canadian Caribbean Line - Low-key cruising to Panama, Central America

and the ABC islands during the winter.

Carnival Cruise Lines - Fun, fun, fun. That's the motto and with departure ports

like New Orleans, Boston and San Juan the party begins before you even board the

ship.

Celebrity Cruises - Not too pricey, with a choice of seven, 10 or 11-night

cruises departing from Ft. Lauderdale or San Juan.

Clipper Cruises - For the niche market looking for a nature or cultural

experience.

Club Mediterranee, S.A. - Think the Club Med that you have heard of on land, if

you like that and don't mind departing from Martinique then this cruise is

perfect.

Costa Cruise Lines - It's all about "cruising Italian style" in the warm waters

of the Caribbean beginning in Miami.

Crystal Cruises - Sophisticated travelers only. A little too stuffy for the

person who enjoys the "party" cruise.

Cruise-Travel-Vacations: Cruising With Kids - Part 3

CabinsAre cribs and/or day beds or cots available to put in our room? If so, is there a rental fee? Are adjoining cabins available? (If you have a BIG or extended family)How big are the cabins? Are guardrails available for bunk beds?DiningDoes the menu offer food my children will eat?If not, are pizza and burgers and hot dogs and such available? Is there a children's menu available for each meal?Is early seating available or does the ship have "open" seating so that we can eat at a time close to when the children normally dine?

Cruise-Travel-Vacations: Activities and Sleeping Arrangements - Part 2

You can do everything from sit on the deck and enjoy the view to more strenuous activities like hiking, scuba diving, or other water sports. European cruises often feature city or museum tours and other cultural opportunities.Caribbean and South Pacific cruises feature island tours and beach and ocean sports. Many cruise lines' will provide you a list of shore activities offered before you book, either via the Internet or from your travel agent. You normally do not have to decide on the shore activities before you sail, but you may be asked to book the shore excursions not long after embarkation. Some shore excursions have a limited number of slots, so if you absolutely MUST have a private tour of the Vatican, a helicopter ride over a volcano, or go scuba diving over a Caribbean shipwreck, ask if you can book space in advance. The activities director will give passenger briefings on the shore excursions available after you get onboard, but I like to have a general idea of what I want to do in each port before I sail. Do you like to dress-up?

"A little battered by summer hurricanes, Southwest Florida has stormed back into business for winter visitors. The Gulf Coast of Florida, with its winter airs, remains a huge lure for those travellers with warm ambitions. What seems cool to locals can be literally balmy to folks who live in colder climes. Even the Gulf of Mexico teases in winter, with water temperatures around 15 C, certainly suitable for bare feet and even the heartier swimmers."

"Ever visited the most beautiful destination in the world? As the crow flies, that specific spot, reachable only by boat or floatplane, sits a mere 250 miles due north of Seattle. It had been 41 years since my most recent visit to Malibu, a rocky outreach which connects glacier-carved Jervis Inlet with the diamond-petite Princess Louisa Inlet. For 40 years my wife, has heard stories of year-round snow-capped mountains falling straight to the sea."
