" Travel Destinations: Activities on St. Croix Once the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Christiansted is the perfect place to begin your visit to St. Croix. Fort Christiansvaern, built by the Danish as protection from pirates and other plunderers, stands over Christiansted Harbor. Nearby, the Steeple Building houses artifacts from St. Croix's Carib and Arawak Indian settlements and colonial sugar plantations. Other activities and attractions for visitors include the Divi Carina Bay Casino, the St. Croix Aquarium, St. George Village Botanical Gardens, scuba diving, horseback riding, biking, and duty-free shopping. Golf is extremely popular on St. Croix. The Buccaneer Resort's Bob Joyce-designed par-70 course offers magnificent panoramic vistas of Christiansted harbor to the west, St. Thomas and St. John to the north, and Buck Island National Park to the east. The award-winning Carambola Golf Club course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, is the site of the annual LPGA Golf Tournament and winner of the Golf magazine gold medal. The Reef Golf Course on Teague Bay offers a nine-hole course. Adventure seekers can explore St. Croix's beautiful west end on horseback or by bike. Guided tours are available for all experience levels. Hikers will find several indigenous and migratory species in the forest and in the Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge. St. Croix offers some of the best snorkeling in the world. Buck Island, famous for its striking natural beauty and underwater snorkeling trails, is one of only two underwater National Monuments in the United States. The north shore wall of the island, the Salt River Canyon, and Cane Bay offer world-class scuba diving. Kayakers can see snowy egrets, great barracudas, spotted eagle rays, and hundreds of other species in Salt River Bay National Park and Ecological Preserve. Travel Corner: Public Charter Flights - Part 4 You alone are responsible for knowing if you need a visa and passport for your trip. You can be certain of the visa and passport rules of the countries you plan to visit by calling or writing their embassies in Washington, D.C. or their consulates in some major U.S. cities. If your luggage gets lost during your tour, there may be a dispute over who is liable. The charter airlines process claims for bags that were lost or damaged while in their possession. If it is not clear where the problem occurred (e.g. between the airport and a hotel), the operator and the airline may both decline liability. To cover yourself, find out if your renter s or homeowner s insurance policy covers losses that happen when you're away from home. You might also ask your travel agent if there s a one-shot baggage insurance policy available to cover baggage problems while you are on your charter trip. Your charter may be delayed. Last-minute schedule changes and departure delays of several hours are not uncommon on charters. A flight can be delayed up to 48 hours before the charter operator must offer you the option to cancel with a full refund. Charters and scheduled flights operate independently of each other. If there's a delay on the scheduled flight connecting you to the city where your charter departs, causing you to miss your charter, you lose your flight and money. Charter reservations are only good for one flight. If you miss it for any reason, you're probably out of luck. Check with the charter operator to see if he has another charter flying to your destination. Travel Tips: Getting the Best Air Fares - Part 2 Plan as far ahead as you can. Most airlines set aside only a few seats on many desirable flights at the lower rates. The real best bargains often sell out very quickly. On the other hand, if a particular flight is not selling as well as expected, air carriers sometimes make more discount seats available for a particular flight just before the advance-purchase deadline expires. For example, if the lowest fare has a 21-day advance-purchase requirement but is sold out for most dates, and you can go any time, ask about fare availability on flights 21 or 22 days from when you call. While planning ahead is a good general rule, if you can bide your time you might encounter a "fare sale." Many airlines put seats on sale for brief periods several times a year (although you usually can purchase tickets for flights weeks or months after the end of the sale period). It is difficult to predict when these sales will occur, although they often fall during times when people are less likely to buy airline tickets (e.g. early autumn or right immediately after New Years). In a large metropolitan area, the fare could depend on which airport you use. For example, if you are going to Southeast Florida and plan to rent a car, it might not make much difference if you fly to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, except for ticket price. Also, a connection (change of planes) or a one-stop flight is sometimes cheaper than a nonstop. Always check on alternate airports and routings when pricing a ticket. "

" Travel Destinations: Virgin Islands National Park You can't visit St. John without experiencing the Virgin Islands National Park. The park sprawls over most of the island and its surrounding waters. The famous Reef Bay Trail takes hikers through dense forests, plantation ruins, and rock outcroppings marked by well-preserved petroglyphs. Winding through subtropical vegetation, 22 additional nature trails offer spectacular views. Travel Tips: Coping With Flight Delays - Part 2 Call the airline well ahead of your departure time to check on your flight s status. If there is a problem, try to rebook over the telephone. While airlines often try to call to notify you of schedule changes, it may not be possible to do so if the airline becomes aware of the delay only shortly before the flight. It is wise to check. Also, make sure your airline s record of your reservation contains a telephone number where you can be reached, or you will lose any opportunity of being called about a delay or flight change. If your flight is delayed, try to find out how late it will be so that you can evaluate your options. But keep in mind that it is sometimes difficult for airlines to estimate the total duration of a delay during its early stages. In so-called creeping delays, unanticipated developments may occur. Weather that had been forecast to improve can instead deteriorate, or a mechanical problem can turn out to be more complex than initially expected. Travel Corner: Public Charter Flights - Part 3 If your charter operator notifies you of a major change before departure, you get a full refund if you decide to cancel. If you choose not to cancel, the operator is not required to make partial refunds. However, if you don t find out about a change until after your trip has begun, you can reject the changed flight or hotel, make and pay for your own alternative plans, and insist on a refund for the original component when you get home. If you decide to accept a change in date or city, keep in mind the effect it will have on any connecting scheduled-service arrangements you may have made, particularly if your scheduled-service fare restricts your ability to make changes. Public charters can be sold on a one-way basis, butno "open returns" are allowed on round-trip public charters. Be sure you have a specific return date, city, and flight, so you won't be stranded. The charter operator has to take specific steps to protect your money. The operator must have a surety agreement, such as a bond, and must usually have an escrow account at a bank that holds your money until your flight operates. If your money is going into a charter escrow account, the bank will be named in your contract, and the check that is sent to the charter operator should be made payable to that bank. (If you are using a travel agent, it s OK for you to make your check out to that agent; the agency will make its check payable to the escrow account.) Identify the departure date and destination on the face of the check. If you pay by credit card, the charter operator is required to ensure that your payment is deposited in the escrow account. If a charter operator goes out of business you should contact the surety company or bank identified in your contract for a refund. "
