" Travel Destinations: United States Virgin Islands The United States Virgin Islands offers something for everyone. Breathtaking beaches with emerald water. Secluded coves, pristine coral reefs, and untouched rainforests. Friendly people with a unique music, cuisine, and culture. Posh hotels, cozy inns, and unspoiled campgrounds. Wonderful restaurants, world-class shopping, and exciting festivals. Come visit America's Caribbean and see what we have to offer you. Tropical Travel Tips: Staying Healthy in the Tropics - Part 5 What is CDC doing to prevent travelers' diarrhea? CDC, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and several Ministries of Health, is working to improve food and water safety around the world. CDC also investigates risk factors associated with acquisition of TD, to assist in identifying more effective preventive measures. CDC continues to monitor antimicrobial resistance in other countries and in the United States. In addition, CDC, in collaboration with international agencies, is working to improve sanitary conditions in foreign accommodations (e.g., tourist resorts) and frequently consults with travel medicine specialists and local and state health departments. CDC is responsible for evaluating sanitation on cruise ships docking in US ports. Please visit CDC's Traveler's Health site for more information about the vessel sanitation program and for a summary of recent vessel inspections. How can I learn more about travelers' diarrhea? Potential travelers should consult with a doctor or a travel medicine specialist before departing on a trip abroad. Information about TD is available from your local or state health departments or the World Health Organization (WHO). Other information that may be of interest to travelers can be found at the CDC Travelers' Health homepage at http://www.cdc.gov/travel. Travel Tips: Coping With Flight Delays - Part 3 If the problem is with local weather or air traffic control, all flights will probably be late and there is not much you or the airline can do to speed up your departure. If there is a mechanical problem with the plane for your particular flight or if the crew is delayed on an incoming flight, you might be better off trying to arrange another flight, as long as you do not have to pay a penalty or higher fare for changing your reservations. (It is sometimes easier to make such arrangements from a pay phone or cell phone than at a ticket counter.) If you find a flight on another airline, ask the first airline to endorse your ticket to the new carrier, which could save you a fare increase. Remember, however, that there is no rule requiring an airline to do this. If you are using an electronic ticket, you will probably have to get paper documentation issued before it can be endorsed to another carrier. If your flight is canceled, most airlines will rebook you on their next flight to your destination on which space is available, at no additional charge. If this involves a significant delay, find out if another carrier has seats and ask the first airline to endorse your ticket to that carrier. Finding extra seats may be difficult, however, especially over holidays and other peak travel times. You may also demand a refund for a canceled flight. "

" Travel Tips: Getting the Best Air Fares - Part 6 A number of airlines send e-mail messages every week to receive notification of last-minute fare specials for departures within the next few days. See the airlines' World Wide Web sites for information about these programs, or call their reservations line. For a list of airline web sites, go to http://www.airlines.com or http://www.smilinjack.com (Do not assume that an airline reservation agent or travel agent will be aware of the fares offered to e-mail subscribers.) Many airlines offer a seniors discount off any fare to travelers over a certain age. In addition, some carriers offer bereavement and emergency illness fares with varying documentation requirements and discounts. If you are a member of an airline's frequent-flyer program and you are considering buying a promotional or deep-discount fare, ask if that fare will earn frequent-flyer miles. After you buy your ticket, you may wish to call the airline or travel agent once or twice before departure to confirm your reservations and check the fare. Fares change all the time, and if that same fare goes down before you fly, some airlines will refund the difference. But you have to ask. Travel Destinations: Activities on St. John Virgin Islands National Park, renowned throughout the world for its breathtaking beauty, covers approximately 3/5 of St. John, and nearly all of Hassel Island in the Charlotte Amalie harbor on St. Thomas. Within its borders lie protected bays of crystal blue-green waters teeming with coral reef life, white sandy beaches shaded by seagrape trees, coconut palms, and tropical forests providing habitat for over 800 species of plants. To these amazing natural resources, add relics from the Pre-Colombian Amerindian Civilization, remains of the Danish Colonial Sugar Plantations, and reminders of African Slavery and the Subsistence Culture that followed during the 100 years after Emancipation - all part of the rich cultural history of the Park and its island home. Visitors looking for an uncommon Caribbean experience can explore the 22 hiking trails managed by the National Park Service within Virgin Islands National Park. The woodland trails winding through subtropical vegetation can be challenging, especially if your trail takes you to the summit of Bordeaux Mountain, St. John's highest peak. The famous three-mile Reef Bay Trail takes hikers through dense forests, plantation ruins, and rock outcroppings marked by well-preserved petroglyphs. After touring the island on foot, visitors may also tour the island's scenic roads in a rented automobile or bicycle. Two-hour safari bus tours and taxi tours are available as well, narrated by guides well-versed in West Indian folklore and in the history and natural wonders of St. John. Snorkeling on St. John is an ideal way to discover the beauty of the island's coast. Trunk Bay's snorkeling trail provides underwater plaques describing the marine life found in the area. Cinnamon Bay is another popular snorkeling destination. Snuba, a unique activity available on St. John, combines the techniques of snorkeling and scuba diving without the heavy dive gear and extensive training courses. Personalized instruction, equipment, and guided underwater tours are all provided. Snuba divers can reach depths of up to 20 feet to discover the wonders of the aquatic world. No prior experience is required. Fishing, sailing, scuba diving, and windsurfing are also popular; rental equipment and guides are available for all skill levels. For more pedestrian pursuits, you'll find that our dozens of famous, secluded beaches are exactly what you need. Tropical Travel Tips: Staying Healthy in the Tropics - Part 3 For additional information on malaria risk and prevention see Malaria Information for Travelers to Tropical South America. See also Preventing Malaria in the Pregnant Woman (Information for the Public) and Preventing Malaria in Infants and Children (Information for the Public). A certificate of yellow fever vaccination may be required for entry into certain of these countries. For detailed information, see Comprehensive Yellow Fever Vaccination Requirements. Also, find the nearest authorized U.S. yellow fever vaccine center. If you visit the Andes Mountains, ascend gradually to allow time for your body to adjust to the high altitude, which can cause insomnia, headaches, nausea, and altitude sickness. In addition, use sun block rated at least 15 SPF, because the risk of sunburn is greater at high altitudes. Dengue, filariasis, leishmaniasis, onchocerciasis, and American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease) are other diseases carried by insects that also occur in this region. Protecting yourself against insect bites (see below) will help to prevent these diseases. Because motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury among travelers, walk and drive defensively. Avoid nighttime travel if possible and always use seat belts. CDC recommends the following vaccines (as appropriate for age): See your doctor at least 4 6 weeks before your trip to allow time for immunizations to take effect. "

The Mercury: Divers warned on risks [23nov04] -

""This apparatus is not regulated in Tasmania." Using a faulty hookah unit can result in carbon monoxide fumes from the motor exhaust being pumped down the line to the diver, which can be fatal. And many untrained divers use hookah units without backup air supplies, meaning that if the main unit ceases to function the diver must swim quickly back to the surface, resulting in decompression sickness, more commonly known as the bends. A person affected by the bends must receive urgent treatment in a hyperbaric chamber. "We like to treat people as early as possible because we get the best results and cure rate," Dr Smart said."

"DAY 1: If said in tandem, the words "Mexico" and "road trip" bring to mind inexplicably placed speed bumps, banditos, and many rolls of Tums. But toss "Baja" into the mix and thoughts of low-slung fishing villages, pristine beaches, and a classic North American jaunt take hold. From Los Cabos Airport, near San Jos del Cabo, drive one hour northeast to Cabo Pulmo and the only living coral reef in western North America. There, stow your gear in one of Cabo Pulmo Resort's thatch-roof bungalows and motor out to the emerald waters on the far side of the reef. Scuba vets will feast on two-tank dives alongside fridge-size grouper and graceful rays."

"A mother sea otter with a baby on her belly watched as we entered the water. The Alaskan water felt refreshingly cool as I entered through the shimmering sunlit surface, during what would normally be considered dusk. Distant snow-powdered mountains, draped in a blanket of pine trees, gradually disappeared as we submerged. Alongside my dive buddy Ed Lindquist, an experienced dive guide and charter operator from Sterling, a city in Alaska. I felt excited to explore a place few have ever seen. With camera in hand, I set out to document my first dive in this land of the midnight sun."
