Loooooooong recap -

" If I knew not posting would result in lovely phone calls from important people I miss, I'd be delinquent in updating more often. However, that said, I do like to keep track of the days, and aside from saying I'd fill in the blanks from the end of December, I want to do so before I myself forget. So, having just given Dave the story, I now write it down:December 20: Took the bus to Logan. Left forty minutes late but still arrived, checked in, and made it through security three hours before my flight left. Made random phone calls to attempt to amuse myself. Didn't think to call Christina's parents who both would've actually been there to talk to me and take up time, and who would've been delighted to do so. I'd discover this later and regret not making that call.On the plane sat next to a weird guy. How was he weird? Well I just can't say. He breathed a bit too loud the whole time and generally gave me bad vibes. I'm being very unfair to this man, and I realize this. I make no actual judgements on him, but say only that he made me uncomfy. I tried to read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (which I read a bit of in the airport when the phone calls I did make were a bust) but the plane lighting was't doing it for me. Attempted to fiddle with my in flight entertainment. Pushed a few buttons trying to bypass the trilingual instructions which didn't seem to want to stop after English, and kinda broke the system. "Unknown error (-1)" That was the end of that. I then pretended to be asleep to avoid human interaction. Dude next to me ordered several complimentary hard beverages within the first hour of the flight. The seat to my left was empty, and a yuppie-looking dude was in the leftmost seat of the inner quartet of chairs. Fell into actual sleep for two hours, tops, during this flight. December21: Arrived in Zurich on schedule. Read JS&MN in the airport during my four hour layover. Listened in on conversation between Japanese tourists, a group of maybe 20 stood near where I sat on a bench mid terminal (because my connexion didn't have a gate assigned yet). Slightly astonished at how much Japanese I retained.Arrived in Hamburg on time. Breezed through the exit super quick, to see a very smiling Christina waiting for me! YAY! Christina! Many hugs, and Joy and then took transportation to her room.Sat and giggled like small children and enjoyed each other's company and laughed and relished being both in the same continent and room, and effectively ruined all sense of any hugeness to the planet.Made noodles carbonarra, because spaghetti carbonarra is my favourite thing to eat for dinner at Christina's house, and we didn't go get spaghetti. Christina gave me a book of german fairy tales and the complete illustrated Lewis Carroll for xmas. Happy Amanda. I slept in Lizzie's room, but didn't go to sleep until 330am, because I read Alice in Wonderland all night.December 22: Declined Christina's normally tempting offer of banana pancakes for breakfast. Got scolded for not eating enough. Went to town. Went to an exhibit: Die Brucke. All justapostioney and mostly pieces I very enjoyed. A handful of Van Goghs. Good times. Went to the Smith center, had cocoa. Worked on a 1500 piece puzzle that wasn't as interesting as it should've been. Put Fight Club on (in english) in the background. Eventually got frustrated with the puzzle, and distracted by the pretty that is Brad. Gave up on the puzzle. I'd say we worked on it for 5 hours, but really it was more like 3 because once we started the movie it hardly got any attention. (I think this math is right. But I won't swear to it. All I know is, it was midafternoon when we got to the Smith center, barely dark.) Post movie cleaned up. Looked up address of a restaurant and went out for Chinese food. It was 9ish when we ate. Good food.( I suddenly feel weird because I'm writing about Germany having just been asked about it by Dave, but at the Chinese restaurant, I, in fact, talked about Dave, at least part of the conversation, so now it's this weird high tide/low tide mental imagery I've got going on.) Maybe we watched some Buffy season three when we got back from dinner and maybe we didn't. I think maybe that didn't happen yet. It's blurring. I went to sleep again at 330, having finished Alice in Wonderland and started Through the Looking Glass.December 23: This was Thursday, and Thursday, we went to Lubeck. First, Christina made pancakes. Regular pancakes. I'm pretty sure that was Thursday... We took a later train than originally planned but this was good as we got tired in Lubeck faster than anticipated. Had fabulous timing, waiting in a loooooong line of real live people to buy tickets from a real live person, with five minutes to spare before the train went. Discussed a lot of television on the train to Lubeck.Wandered all about Lubeck, passed a marionette musem, but didn't go in. It was raining by the way. Silly spitting windy weather. Passed the city gate, this happened before the marionettes, but my mind doesn't go with chronology. Passed an ice skating rink that was flooding. Then came the marionettes. Went into some churches. Looked all over the Weihnachtsmarkt (is that remotely spelled right?). More churches. Thought about eating lunch in a real restaurant, but then decided against it and got superfluffy ice cream. I had strawberry. Christina vanilla. Then Christina had to one-up me and eat real food. Mushroom somethingy. Wandered around more, intending to go into the world's most famous marzipan store so I could get vivi some for Christmas. Christina had been there before. She insisted repeatedly it should be "around this corner" or "behind that wall". We had a bit of trouble finding it. Got massive pretzels. SO good. Looked some more. "The booths are throwing me off" she said. "They weren't here then." Of course they weren't; it was summer. Finished the pretzels, went into another kirk and sat for a while, because it was very cold, and windy and felt like mimes except for real, and we'd been walking for, gasp!, two hours straight! It felt like we'd been there much longer. Walked some more. Still no success. Went into a more town-ey part of town. Still having a lovely time. I got a fanta. Mmmm. Fanta. Found a map and went into a tourist booth, whatthehellistheword? Anyway, and little info place thingy whatever. Grabbed a brouchure so Christina could look up the address and be reminded of the name of the store. Looked. Laughed. We'd walked past it 87 times. So we go to where Christina thought it was, a place that we'd passed and which had awesome looking cakes. This is funny because Christina kept mentioning how great the cakes at the place were too. But when we got there she realized, no, that wasn't it, but we had passed it and really, she knew where it was. So we go, and we had passed it 87 times, and it was, in fact, possibly the first store we passed when arriving at the Weihnachtsmarkt, which is why we didn't see it immediately. The eyes were drawn left, and not right to the establishment. So we went in. She got cake. I got marzipan present. We decided we'd take the next train home, which was in five minutes, so we decided we'd take the train home in an hour. Wandered around more, had a nice time, took the train home. Both fell slightly asleep on the train. Then walked into Christina's room. Sat on the bed. An hour and a half later, woke up. Christina ate dinner. I got scolded again. Threats of telling Cynthia were made. I think then we did in fact watch a bit of Buffy. Two maybe. Then split rooms again. I finished Through the Looking Glass.December 24: Christina woke me up. I hardly noticed. She went grocery shopping. I went back to sleep for a bit. I woke again but she was not back yet. More reading. She arrived midday. We cooked the rest of the day. Made ginger snaps for a ginger snap requiring dessert (you can't buy cooking in Germany). Made toffee with no candy thermometer. Quite successfully. Chris poured it out before it was really done, not wanting to burn it, but I talked her into cooking it again, and it worked. We coated it in melted chocolate and then almonds. In the meantime sugar cookies were made, some of which also covered in chocolate and/or almonds. Really ask her about the cooking. It was all her fabulosity. All day more threats of telling on me for the not eating and not eating enough protein. She and Trista made corn chowder for dinner, which we ate watching still more Buffy. The two of them went to a concerty something or other in church. I stayed in because I didn't feel too well (the whole trip I didn't really which probably had something to do with my never wanting to eat). I watched Buffy S3s with commentary. What a lovely Christmas eve. Talked to Tom on the phone, who called while Chris was out. Read a really funny recap of Echolls Family Christmas (even in Germany I couldn't escape the thrall of Veronica. Damn did I bore Christina with a lot of babbling. See? Halfway round the world one can't escape my babbles.) She came back and went to bed. I read more.December 25: Christina woke me up with "it's Christmas! it's Christmas!" and that I could stay asleep but not in that room because Trista's sister was coming. Went into Christina's room and watched her open all her gifts. She's damn cute when she's all childlike excited. We played with her new camera. Good times. Got a call telling us dinner was pushed back an hour. (All of this is over a span of possibly two hours) Then Trista came back from the airport with her sister. We went and ate pastries for brekkie in Trista's room. We parted ways. I forget when happened between then and the needing to go to dinner.....something.... we didn't just hang out. Maybe I read and Christina did something computery? Certainly for some of the time. I can't remember. Then we took the bus to dinner at professor's house, but got on the wrong one, which Christina realized three minutes after she said "this is the bus I take to school every day." Really amusing. It turned. She wondered where the hell we were going. W got off. Waited outside with desserts for 15 minutes for another bus. Took photos. Eventually ended up only five minutes late to dinner at Smith professor director of the abroad Germany program etc title you get the point's gorgeous huge apartment. Trista+sister were there, and Liz, a Smithie I'd never met and her sister and sister's boysomething. Had dinner. Again I didn't so much eat. But all the stuff was good. Quiche and rice and ravioli and.....lots of other things I didn't eat. Then all our crazy desserts. And back again. Christina did the monsterpphonecall to all the fam in CT. I read on the bed. Then we discovered a voicemail from Thursday from Vivi. A confusing voicemail. Apparently my gram (who bakes)'s sister, who still lives in Germany (somewhere near Frankfurt methinks) called gram for Christmas, as is normal, and said something like "Oh it was so wonderful! Amanda, Vivi's daughter phoned me. And gram was surprised to hear this, but pleased. And asked how my german was, and gram's sister said very good, and so I'm getting this chain-of-command props for calling her, but I totally never did, and don't have her number, and very can't speak German. And no one can figure out what happened. She has had strokes in the past, but this was in the context of she called gram and implied that the conversation Just Happpened. and she was so lucid, and specific: Amanda called! Vivi's daughter! It's still a mystery. Plus I wasn't exactly sleep dialing or anything because Christina's phone is America-based. The whole thing was weird and made me sad. But kinda glad if she was so happy. More Buffy I think. I started Sylvie and Bruno that day. While Christina was gift-unwrapping. I read a ton of it. My new fave thang. So we went to bed both reading, but Chris stopped to sleep long before I. Of course.December26: Got up at dawn. Pre-dawn actually, the sun rises later there. Went to the airport at 7 in the morning. Checked in fairly quickly despite a family of six conspicuously stepping directly in front of me in line. Confused the heck outta me for a moment, but didn't matter. We hung around the airport together for as long as seemed reasonable. And then I got all sad. And Christina went off.The plane left a wee bit late. Got to Zurich, and the connexion was already delayed 20 minutes. It was snowing/raining in Zurich. Boarded 40 minutes later. Taxied out to the runway and spent forty more minutes being de-iced. Flew over France to avoid turbulence, or bad turbulence, but had mild turbulence pretty much the whole flight. Ew. Read Sylvie and Bruno some more. Had the richest macaroni and cheese ever on that flight, and caramel pudding. Crazy Swiss lunch. Read read read. I was in an emergency aisle, so the screen for in-flight stuff was in the arm rest. I didn't feel like fiddling with it. I just read. Landed an hour and a half late to find massive snowing in New England. Took the bus home. Halfway to providence discovered how shitty the roads truly were and suddenly understood why nobody wanted to pick me from the bus station. Blizzard roads and 3 hours later than anticipated I arrived at my house. The rest is blurrier:December 27: I think I saw Frances. I think we went to the mall this day with Emma and April and peeps. Definitely talked to Frances. She's in my head that day.December 28: Got info from NTI. Read it all. Spent afternoon on phone with Christina.December 29: Maybe that was the mall day.....I know I saw a lot of April. Maybe I went to April's house. Maybe that was when we ran errands and tried to go to the SCUBA shop. I think it was. Maybe this was the day I drove my mom around for errands. That seems right, Wednesday seems right. Hey maybe Wednesday was that day we all made the phone call rounds and were supposed to end up hanging out at someone's house but then never did and I fell asleep early cuz the jetlag hit. Or it coulda been the day before....what was on the TV when those calls were happening? Oh bother.December 30: Why am I trying, I know I don't know. That coulda been the errand day. I know I saw April three days in a row. What did we do? Was that the carrot cake?December 31: Friday morning went to Smithfield with Frances and got shoes. Had Taco Bell for lunch. Then went home to be useful. Played phone tag with Anna. Eventually got a ride from her to Beck's and went in the beckmobile, along with Andrew, to Worcester for Emma's New Year's Eve spiel. Good times. January 1: Came back from Worcester midday. Probably was entirely unproductive the rest of the day. Maybe more Sylvie and Bruno.I really can't remember the rest. Dashitall. This will bother me later. Woke. Read things online for an hour. Was annoyed at the rain, which turned to snow before brunch. Watched Spiderman (the cartoon). Showered. Went to brunch. French toast with peanut butter. Hung out with Frances. Played a good game of Scrabble. We were pretty much tied the whole time. I won, but only because I went out first. Ate a bunch of muffins from brunch I had intended to have for dinner, knowing I wouldn't want to leave my room for as unsatisfying a Smith dinner as was predicted. Went back to my room. Had email from Aviator. Called. Decided to de-ice my car, because the snow and rain alternated every fifteen minutes all day, and went over there to steal plays. Got an omellette out of it. Also a Hershey bar I should not have eaten. Drove back without incident. Did that stalling thing. Got a call from Dave. Was very happy to hear from him. Discovered a new parking ban. Schlepped the car back to the tennis courts. Walked back. Did this.Have I read any plays today? No. Did I type up my writing assignment? No. Did I download those downloads? No. I am entirely making bad habits left and right? Quite. Does it feel like 10pm? Not at all.So now I shall do something, as I am so wide awake, and feel like it's midafternoon. But I don't know what. I doubt it'll be read. I'm in too active a mood.Bleh.I miss Christina. "

"If one day of Halloween just doesn't seem like enough, why not travel to the Riviera Maya region of Mexico for 3 full days of spooky fun, where spirits and ghosts and dearly departed souls preside over this uniquely eerie Halloween celebration from October 31 through November 2, 2004. Starting October 31, citizens of the Riviera Maya begin to make preparations for All Saints Day or the Day of the Dead, celebrated November 1, a day for fond remembrance of all those who have passed on. As part of the traditional festivities, families construct elaborate altars in their homes to honor the spirits and pay tribute to their late relatives."
