"Things I love about the Philippines:
No. 1 - The freedom of the press. True, many stories are sensationalistic, but there are many investigative journalists out there who despite risk to themselves publish great stuff.
No. 2 - People power and the democratic government that resulted.
No. 3 - The people. Where else in the world do you find such friendly, helpful, people, so willing to overlook the foibles of the newly-arrived tourist, to make them feel so at homel?
No. 4 - The safety. During many trips, I've only once felt slightly uneasy, when trekking by myself I met a group of people who identified themselves as "NPA"."

"Detroit mom A. Thomas is used to decorating cakes for weddings and birthdays. But on Thursday, she's baking a cake to mark a global occasion: It's World AIDS Day.
Thomas is hoping that the icing on the cake will be life-saving information for those attending the World AIDS Day Celebration at Detroit's St. John CME Church.
"One of the greatest risk factors for getting HIV/AIDS is thinking that you're not a risk factor," said Thomas, who's HIV-positive and asked that I withhold her first name. "With a disease that's 100% preventable, it's a shame that anyone should have to suffer."

"- Bassenthwaite Lake Restoration Programme
A former scene of crime investigator has set out on a new career helping Lake District farmers and communities look at ways of protecting lakes and rivers.
Karen Austin, who has latterly been working on Environment Agency fishery schemes, will be part of a Bassenthwaite-based project chosen for a national trial aimed at improving water quality.
Under the Bassenthwaite Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) Project, farmers and other landowners in the area are encouraged to protect water flowing into Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater."
