" I wouldn't describe it as madness I d call it heaven. The snow feels like silk under your feet the air so cold and so pure that every breath feels like drinking in another few years of youth. The snow is so clean it's almost blue and on a clear day the sight of Mt Ruapehu can leave tears in your eyes."

"The Salt Lake Tribune PARK CITY -- Shelley Pfister's friends back home in South Africa will never look at her the same again, not after they find out she has become a successful snowshoe racer. Responding to a challenge from her boss at Canyon Mountain Sports, the equipment rental and retail shop at The Canyons resort, Pfister entered Saturday's second annual Atlas Uphill Snowshoe Race, knowing virtually nothing about the sport. "This is only the second time in my life that I've seen snow," she said of her arrival this winter in Utah. "But I'm eager to do everything I can while I'm here. I may come in last but I'll be smiling."

"Michigan has its share of tall tales. The exploits of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe are favorites that seem to grow with each telling. But as cold winds blow and perhaps snow is piling up in your area, consider the true story of Frederick Baraga. The details of his life seem fantastic, but these stories have made this immigrant priest, a man of small stature, stand much taller than the fictional lumberjack. To get a glimpse into Baraga's character, look at his travels in January 1845. He was in L'Anse when he decided to make a trip to Copper Harbor to baptize an infant girl and three others at the new Fort Wilkins."

The premier event, at Vancouver Island's Mount Washington, is followed by five events at Silver Star, Mount Seymour, Sun Peaks and Cypress Mountain, including a grande finale at Whistler-Blackcomb on April 4. "I tag my race series, 'Hike or Run, to Win or for Fun,' says founder Marc Cooney. "I want the day to be about getting out, being fit and having fun. If you can provide those things, you've had a successful race."

"EVERYTHING GOES SILENT WHEN YOU DROP OFF A 100-FOOT CLIFF. Time slows down and you feel like you're flying. Oh, and it's better to exhale. Holding your breath makes you tense and then you flap your arms and lose your balance and . . . ouch, you don't want to go there. That's what pro snowboarder Dave Downing tells me anyway, and I'm gonna take his word for it. Dave talks casually about dropping off cliffs like you might discuss popping off a 2-foot jump. And watching him in numerous snowboarding videos, it's easy to start thinking those skyscraper-sized cliffs are really no big deal."
