"Looking for some winter fun this weekend? Maybe you are craving a quick run down the slopes, a tumble on the snow board terrain course, a cup of cocoa (with marshmallows and whipped cream, of course) by the fire and a cabin in the mountains for a weekend getaway? Or maybe you just need to get away from the grind for just one day. After all it is never too early to use a sick day.
Luckily, you live in Richmond, and that means there are four quality ski resorts anywhere from 90 minutes to four-and-a-half hours away."

"This being winter in St. Louis, a softball tournament is a dicey proposition. With the chilly temperatures (and subzero windchill factors) this week, it's possible that the ground could be blanketed with snow in no time.
But in the name of fun, RiverChase of Fenton (990 Horan Drive, 636-343-0067) has organized a Softball in the Snow Tournament for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, January 24 and 25. Get a team together, pay the $110 tournament fee (that's per team, or $12.22 a player), and take your chances. Maybe things will warm up and you'll play in shirtsleeves in brisk, fall-like weather."

"January 21, 2004
The Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have issued a draft environmental impact statement
addressing the conservation and recovery of Canada lynx for 53 million acres of federal land in
Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming.
Called the Northern Rockies Lynx Amendment, the 430-page DEIS considers five alternatives that
would add measures to conserve habitat for Canada lynx to management plans for 18 national forests
and 4 BLM units. The direction would apply to an estimated 18.5 million acres of lynx habitat.
The full and summary documents, along with background documents, are located on the internet at

"When it comes to long runs, major steeps and big-time vertical, Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, N.Y., has it all.
But did you know that Whiteface has it all for children, too? The Kids Campus is a completely separate area with its own lodge, ski school and ski lifts.
And when the children are all settled in, there is easy trail access for parents who want to take advantage of the resort's wonderful skiing and riding.
Weekend forecast
It has been a wintry week up and down the Appalachians, and the stage is set for a fine weekend on the slopes. The East should see at least a little bit of light snow."
Skiers, snowshoers share trails - The Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon, USA -

"Cross-country skiing is a misnomer. Most recreational Nordic skiers want to stay on track, not head off across untrammeled snow. Skiing's easier and much more enjoyable on those polished parallel lines that form in the snow after a few skiers have used a trail.
And therein lies the source of the latest outdoor conflict, which has cross-country skiers riled up about shuffling snowshoers.
Snowshoes are quiet, slow-moving and the antithesis of "extreme" sports.
They are, however, extremely effective at destroying those neat little lines in the snow that skiers like to slide gracefully along."

"ASHTON - David Gleissner might be a big man on campus at Ashton High School, but in his own family, he's just a young pup cutting his teeth.
Gleissner is the fifth of the wrestling Gleissner brothers, and the first four posted at least 100 wins in their high school careers. David is currently 12 short of that mark.
In the postseason, two of the Gleissners, David a year ago and Joe in 1997, finished second. Mike was fourth in 1995, Jim was a state qualifier in 2001 and Tom didn't make it to state.
David admits becoming the first of the brothers to win a state title is something which drives him."

"Rescue workers used a helicopter Thursday to recover the body of a Great Falls man who was found dead in rugged backcountry near the Showdown Montana ski resort.
Lance Koke, 38, apparently disappeared in the Little Belt Mountains Monday. He was found dead Wednesday night by Meagher County Search and Rescue volunteers and Showdown's ski patrol.
But the terrain was so rugged that searchers had to leave Koke's body overnight and return at sunup the next day with a helicopter.
"It was waist-deep snow and almost vertical mountains," Meagher County Sheriff Rick Seidlitz said Thursday. "We're talking really bad country."
