"
With two major airlines now flying direct from Scotland to the east coast of the USA skiing Stateside has never been easier or cheaper. While package deals to high-profile destinations such as Breckenridge in Colorado or Whistler in British Columbia will still account for a hefty proportion of the skiing traffic to North America Vermont is fast emerging as a top destination for skiers who want to see a bit of the country."

"T-Mobile Diary: Update by Lara Kroepsch
"Hi" to everyone out there reading my letter. I guess I am the first of our team to contribute to our weekly updates, so I hope I can find something interesting to talk about.
First of all, I hope everyone had happy holidays and a good beginning to 2004. My New Year's Eve celebrations were fairly plain and simple this yearexcept for the fact that it marked my first competition of 2004. Yeah, the first event of 2004 was not spent on the bike, and no it wasn't spent going head-to-head pounding shots of Mad Dog (coach will be happy to hear that)."

"ONTONAGON -- The Ontonagon Village Planning Commission did not have a quorum Monday, but an informal discussion will lead to an interesting proposal on the next agenda.
Village manager Penny Osier suggested the logo for the village return to one of its historic themes. She said Ontonagon is the "Gateway to the Porkies," and that signs and possibly a large metal porcupine at the entrances to the county or village would be more accurate in explaining "who we are and where we are."
The theme "Harbortown" was adopted in the 1980s, but as some who attended the meeting pointed out, Ontonagon has not been a harbor town since its early history."

"Two hats.
People who snowshoe in the Wallowas might be wise to bring an extra cap if they are going to venture into back country areas.
Just ask Fred Barstad of Enterprise.
Barstad sees Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep on snowshoe trips above Lostine. Once a bighorn came close enough to steal the cap of a snowshoer Barstad was with. The cap was taken not off his head but from a nearby rock where it had been placed.
Close encounters with big game are one of the perks of snowshoeing in Northeast Oregon. Snowshoers sometimes see wildlife that cross country skiers miss because they can reach places skiers can't."

"Winter sport provides fun and business
By MIKE JOHNSTON
RONALD - Five friends from Western Washington sat around a table last Saturday at their favorite resting spot, the Old No. 3 Restaurant and Lounge, and said they come to Upper County every winter weekend to ride the snow.
Their snowmobiles were neatly parked behind the Old No. 3 as they waited in the warmth for their orders of onion rings and fries. Their helmets, gloves, snow pants and coats were piled high on the next table.
"We come over here to get out of the rat race," said Hans Mak, a Kent policeman. "This is our relaxing time."

"ALBANY, Ga. - Neil Moncrief has thousands of pairs of enormous shoes and he hopes he can find enough big feet to fill them all.
He has shipped a pair of size 17 combat boots to an airman in Afghanistan, a pair of size 15 work boots to an Iraqi working for an American contractor in Iraq, and a pair of size 18 shoes to an 8-tall Miami man who bills himself as the tallest man in the world.
"He's really got a relatively small foot for a man that tall," Moncrief added.
