"NEWCOMB, N.Y. (AP) - When snowfall is skimpy in Avalanche Pass and other popular winter routes through the Adirondack High Peaks, backcountry skiers know Santanoni won't disappoint.
"It's one of the most popular backcountry ski tours, and consistently has the best snow of practically any tour," said Tony Goodwin, author of Ski and Snowshoe Trails in the Adirondacks, published by the Adirondack Mountain Club.
What really sets Santanoni apart among ski destinations, however, is history and architecture.
Camp Santanoni is a historic site at the southern edge of the Adirondack High Peaks in Newcomb, 150 kilometres north of Albany."

"These adjustments for surviving winter can also be observed in many species of wildlife. To survive the winter season, wildlife either migrate, hibernate, or adapt their behavior to colder temperatures and a changing food supply.
Wildlife migrate to find a consistent food supply and avoid the stresses of winter. Birds that migrate may carry up to 50 percent of their body weight as fat at the time of their departure. What do they encounter on their long journeys?"

CHEYENNE - Fresh powder has been scarce over the past week or two but don't let that keep you from getting outside. Ski, snowshoe and sledding conditions are excellent in spite of the recent lack of significant snowfall.
Jill Robinson, spokesperson for the Medicine Bow National Forest, said the snow is packed down but there's still excellent coverage. She recently played hooky for a day and skied the slopes a Steamboat.
"It turned into one of those endless-grin type days," she said. "Thanks to the wonderful grooming, the slopes were great for cruising. I was delightfully surprised."

"LINCOLN, N.H. (Jan. 25) - Despite bitter cold, Stratton Mountain School (SMS) riders slammed the door on the East Coast deep freeze Sunday, dominating the Eastern Regional Championships at Loon Mountain with a sweep of the men's and women's halfpipe.
Michael 'Goldy' Goldschmidt (Bondville, VT), a staple on the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix series, topped the men's contest followed by Grand Prix travelling buddy Louie Vito (Bellefontaine, OH) and Saturday's snowboard cross winner Alex Deibold (Manchester Center, VT)."

First for those of you going skiing or snowboarding instead of X Gaming today:
The snowboarding on Aspen Mountain was phenomenal Sunday, reported one On the Hill correspondent, especially on the backside of Bell Mountain.
"It was pretty crazy," he reported. "It felt like there were two fronts coming in - it was blowing all over the place."
While the windy weather might have made it feel as if there were at least 6 inches of fresh powder anywhere you went, there was a less desirable effect near the end of the day in Copper Bowl."
Searchers Find Snowboarder Stuck In Waist-Deep Snow -

"A snowboarder who ventured outside the boundaries of Durango Mountain Resort during a snowstorm was found soaking wet in waist-deep snow.
A screwdriver had to be used to scrape ice off his boots to get them off, said La Plata County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Dan Bender. The snowboarder, Phil McGovern, was treated for mild hypothermia at the scene Sunday night and driven home.
He was found by rescuers on snow machines three miles from the resort.
Authorities are considering whether McGovern should be prosecuted for illegally leaving the resort boundaries or charged for the cost of his rescue."
