"There's just water, ice, snow, trees and hopefully, some otters and beaver.
Every weekend and one weeknight a week, Fred Kirchner does his workout.
He dons layers of warm clothes, a pair of hip boots and snowshoes and sets off with a weaved basket strapped to his back.
In the basket is a hatchet, a pair of shoulder-length rubber gauntlets and maybe a conibear trap. If he's lucky, the basket will be about 40 pounds heavier on the way out of the woods. If he's too lucky, he might have to make multiple trips to the truck - a mile away - to haul more than 100 pounds of beaver out."

"MIFFLINBURG - The sun was shining bright on Sunday afternoon, making it perfect weather for the outdoor activities of R.B. Winter State Park's Snowfest 2004.
It was estimated that around 800 people attended the event, which included ice skating, ice fishing, broomball, snow-shoeing, ice cutting, an ice rescue demonstration and a silent auction.
Though many people showed up at the park's annual event, there was some competition with the broadcast of the Super Bowl, causing the turnout to be a bit smaller than last year, according to park employee Lori Goodling, though she said overall, the event was successful."

"It's hard enough trying to operate an Alpine resort through the winters of the past few years, though snowmaking certainly helps, but for owners of a cross-country ski center, relying totally on natural snow (with an assist from modern grooming machinery) can be really disheartening.
But John and Maureen Chiarella, who own Norsk Ski Center in New London, aren't discouraged. Their enthusiasm for the sport overcomes any qualms they might have about the wisdom of owning a business that relies on the vagaries of the weather.
John Chiarella is realistic, though."

"It's a solitude not easily found during the high-season summer when some 600,000 visitors a month descend on Yosemite's 1,200 square miles of protected wilderness in the central Sierra Nevada.
Winter attracts just a fraction of those tourists, about 100,000 a month, mostly to Yosemite Valley for views of waterfalls, El Capitan, one of the world's largest granite monoliths, and the towering Half Dome.
Many hikers hang up their gear come the first snow, when Yosemite National Park's backcountry gets socked in by up to 8 feet of the white stuff."

"LOOKOUT PASS -- With five fresh inches of powder on Lookout Pass Sunday morning, the ski area was full of excited skiers and snowboarders ready to make fresh tracks. And the 20 or so athletes competing in the Special Olympics Idaho Regional Winter Games were no different.
Participants from Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston/Clarkston, Moscow and the Silver Valley maneuvered through blue and red flags in giant slalom and downhill events, as well as the glide and super glide which were staged on the bunny hill."
Baker's a shoo-in for nationals -

"The South Shore woman's favorite trails have long been covered by several feet of snow, but Baker can still float across them on an ideal day in January.
Snowshoeing allows the Kingsbury Veterinary Hospital owner and operator to avoid running on pavement or in a gym or making a trip to Carson City for a run.
"It's ideally suited for runners," Baker said. "Snowshoeing is so great . if people knew that, more would get out and do it.
"Most runners I know go down to Carson City and use the roads, but snowshoeing is a way to remain here and take advantage of the beauty around us," Baker said."

"With skiing remaining as fashionable as ever, designers such as Chanel and Dior are adding even more ski wear to their collections.
Celebs such as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have been spotted snowboarding, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas hit the slopes in Canada, and the fashionable crowd including Gucci's Tom Ford and Stella McCartney have been photographed in St Moritz, the winter resort for the rich and famous.
It's the height of the ski season and with the North East not escaping the big freeze, it is more than appropriate to wrap up warm in comfortable, protective clothing - which can also be very fashionable."

Hansen, who has not competed since winning her second world title on home soil in Birmingham last March, will use the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham on 20 February as a warm-up for the World Championships. "It will be straight into the deep end, but I am a lot fitter than I was last year," she said. "My sprinting is fine and my jumping is fine. I have already done more jumping sessions in January than I had up to March last year."
