" ... Eszter Balzs WITH a lack of infrastructure or high mountains locally and Western countries virtually embargoed skiing in the '80s for Hungarians meant a trip to neighboring Slovakia. With the opening of the borders Hungarian skiers turned away from the rustic conditions of their northern neighbor to make tracks to (and in) Austria ..."

Costly and International With a Variety of Tastes -
From: www.nytimes.com

" Moritz might you find ski instructors wearing fashion-perfect ski suits by Prada and a clientele wealthy enough to hire mountain helicopters to ferry skiers past morning lift lines Where else but in St. Moritz does it cost 95 for a T-shirt 0151 on sale where a woman in a fur coat is like a man in a tie anywhere else where a bottle of wine at a pizzeria costs 50 Then again where but in one of the oldest most famous ski areas in the world might you find ice-skating rinks sprinkled like frozen puddles on the landscape babies being towed on wooden sleds as if it were the North Pole and horse-drawn wagons to take the weary skier home after too many vertical feet"

" The White House has defended Bush's record in the Texas Air National Guard far from the battlefields of Vietnam after Democrats accused him of going AWOL. White House spokesman Scott McClellan denied Democratic charges that Bush shirked his military duties in the early 1970s unlike Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry a decorated Vietnam veteran."

""We're virtually hunting them," said Bob Oakleaf, nongame coordinator for Wyoming Game and Fish. "We think it's highly probable that even if there's any individuals left that the population itself may blink out [in the Wyoming Range]." Frisco Gold Rush celebrates 34 years Sunday -
From: www.summitdaily.com

"FRISCO - Last year at the start of the Frisco Gold Rush snowshoe race, the ambient temperature outside was 2 below zero. Forget about the wind chill or anything else. It was just plain cold. It didn't matter, though, as a large field for the event showed up from all across Colorado to contest not just the snowshoe race, but the 10 and 20K Nordic skate races as well as the 5K Nordic classic competition. This year, forecasts are looking downright balmy as the long-term outlook is calling for highs in the low-20s when the 34th edition of the Gold Rush gets started on Sunday."

"The Canada lynx, an elusive wild cat distinctive for its large feet and tufted ears, was listed as a threatened species in 2000. That means the federal government needs to figure out how to manage the thick forests that lynx choose as habitat. In the West, that includes 18.5 million acres on 18 national forests and four Bureau of Land Management Units spread across Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. Previously, a team of Forest Service biologists had proposed banning the expansion of new grooming routes, either for snowmobiling or skiing, and limiting most tree thinning in lynx habitat, except for within 200 feet of homes."

"Legendary saxophone player and blues man Cornelius Bumpus died today of a heart attack while flying from New York to California for a series of concerts, including Sonora-area appearances scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday. "I still can't believe it," said Columbia College music teacher and jazz band leader Rod Harris, who has sponsored Bumpus's Tuolumne County appearances for more than 20 years. Bumpus' wife told Harris that her husband had the heart attack while flying with her on a Jet Blue flight from New York to the Bay Area. After he was stricken, the plane landed in Kansas City, but the musician was already dead."

Decrease of sunlight in winter can trigger depression -

"During the winter months, temperatures aren't the only things dropping. As the snow begins to fall and readings on thermometers plummet, so too, do moods for many people. This change in mood, combined with other symptoms, can be diagnosed as Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, "a type of winter depression that affects an estimated half a million people every winter between September and April -- in particular during December, January and February," according to the SAD Association's Web site, www.sada.org.uk. "SAD is the result of the limited sunlight exposure that accompanies the shorter winter days," said Dr. Michael M."

"Clark and Finch Score Victories At Mammoth Triple Crown Amidst Heavy Winds This past weekend in Mammoth the weather fluctuated like Oprah's weight. On Friday, there were high winds and low visibility, Saturday was sunny, and Sunday saw more wind and bad visibility, just in time for the pipe finals. To add to the fun, the Superpipe also looked to be questionable for a contest of this caliber. Andy Finch said there were a few bumps but the walls were good. Steve Fisher was downright pissed that Frank Wells hadn't shaped the pipe. As a result, the height and difficulty of tricks were a little lower than normal for a Vans Triple Crown."

""We're virtually hunting them," said Bob Oakleaf, nongame coordinator for Wyoming Game and Fish. On Thursday, Bridger-Teton National Forest officials will unveil a draft proposal to manage lynx in the Wyoming Range and across the forest at 6:30 p.m. at the Teton County Commissioners Chambers."

Frisco Gold Rush celebrates 34 years Sunday -
From: www.summitdaily.com
