"Two months ago we broke the news on United States Cycling's Under-23 National Mountain Bike Development Plan. The new program is designed to prepare the best American Espoir athletes for top domestic and international competition. Participants will expand their mental and physiological capabilities through the significant support of the USA Cycling Development Foundation and funding provided by USA Cycling. The ultimate goal of the new U23 Trade Team is to generate gold medal finishes at the World Championships, Pan American Games, and Olympic Games."

"Just getting to Leadville, the highest incorporated town in the U.S. (elevation 10,152 feet), is a thrill. But snowshoeing among the stars to feast on a four-course dinner in a cozy, candlelit yurt is well worth the journey. Tucked away among the trees at Piney Creek Nordic Center at Ski Cooper ski area, Tennessee Pass Cookhouse is a simple one-room yurt attached to a miniscule cooking cabin.
The dictionary definition of a yurt is "a circular, domed, portable tent used by nomadic peoples of central Asia." There's no electricity; there's no running water. The outhouses are chilly. And that's the way the staff-and visitors-like it."

"Day 3: Five centimeters of really wet snow fell last night and that, combined with my bald cyclo-cross tires, meant I had to figure out an alternative plan for the day's workout.
After a bit of thought, out came the snowshoes and off I went for 2.5 hours. It was a brilliant strength workout because the temperature was just above freezing and it was drizzling rain -- which made the snow feel like wet concrete. While snowshoe running I considered how bizarre the idea of exercise is. Most animals move and travel for survival -- and they will walk in tracks that are already set to save energy."
Local Company Drives Auto Industry -

"After 70 years of testing, a Pittsford-based company has done what many thought was impossible.
"We've been telling the automotive companies and the supplier of automotive companies, pigs fly," said James Gleasman of Torvec, Inc.
The company's Full Terrain Vehicle or FTV can go anywhere like a bulldozer, but it has the speed of a wheeled vehicle.
It works much like a 7,000-pound snowshoe.
The FTV moves right on top of snow and mud without sinking. It does it all at highway speeds.
"You can steer it with a steering wheel like a regular truck or car rather than with pedals or levers. It was at that time when we thought, 'Wow."
Breast cancer impressions -

"Yet to those affected by it, much needs to be done to help prevent and treat the disease.
About a hundred hearty survivors and volunteers showed at the Kirkwood Cross Country Ski Center Sunday to use snowshoeing as a method of awareness and morale for those going through cancer and others unfortunately next in line to hear they have it.
Volunteering at the detection tent Sunday morning near the start line, Judi Sparrow of Zephyr Heights knows the reality all too well.
She was diagnosed two years ago - in good health and with no history of cancer in the family."

"MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. (AP) -- A former Olympic hockey player who became lost in the Sierra Nevada wilderness survived for a week by living in a makeshift igloo and eating pine nuts and needles.
Searchers found former French national team player Eric Lemarque sprawled in the snow, conscious but barely moving. He was unable to find his way back to Mammoth Mountain ski resort after going out of ski-run boundaries while snowboarding alone.
"It was amazing that he survived in that cold," rescuer Joe Rousek said. "We knew he was a hockey player, in good shape. But I don't think he'd have lasted another night."

"OREGON STATE: Begins career this spring OSU head coach Pat Casey says: "Mitch is a great athlete. Injuries kept him out for a lot of the fall, but he'll be a very productive player at Oregon State. He has the versatility to play the infield or the outfield."
