When small is beautiful -

" There is a moment just as you swing out of Ljubljana airport on the road to the coast when Slovenia hits you like the smack of some particularly potent schnapps. It's the sudden appearance of the mountains on your left the enormous scree-topped points of the Kamnik-Savinja alps rising sharply from a lush plain that first makes you realise this might be rather more special than you expected."

Mullen: Teen's tunes aid homeless -
From: www.sltrib.com

"When Woody Adler and I chatted Tuesday afternoon, he was way cool -- hardly the picture of anxiety I imagined a concert promoter might be four days out from his first big show. He had been practicing for his own two numbers -- a piece for guitar with Spanish influence and a cover of a Green Day song with his three-man garage band. But hey, it was all good. "I'm ready to go," Woody said. Woody is the impresario behind "Kids Playing for Kids," a benefit concert this Saturday for the Road Home overflow homeless shelter in Midvale. He chose this cause because the Midvale location caters only to families. He wants to help kids."

Anchorage Daily News | Cabin life isn't for everyone -

"Big Ray is gone now. He left about a month ago -- for good. He only got here in August. But I'll miss him. I liked his cologne; you don't smell that in Haines often. And his East Coast accent and his quick wit. He reminded me of people I grew up with. At first, Big Ray loved Haines and bought a cabin near ours thinking he would live off the land, hunt, fish and zoom around in speedboats in the summer and snowmachines in the winter. He'd take his giant new truck four-wheeling in the backcountry out his cabin door. The trouble is that the Chilkat Peninsula doesn't have wide-open spaces."

"WASHBURN -There's little doubt the Book Across the Bay cross country ski and snowshoe event has gotten bigger and better each year since its inception in 1996. This year nearly 1,500 participants swooshed, shuffled and sniffled their way along the 10K course from Ashland to Washburn at dusk on Saturday. With temperatures hovering at or below zero, frosty faces and numb hands were lit with warm smiles and glowing eyes. Droves of skiers and shoers huddled around the bonfires that dotted the snaking path over an icy Lake Superior, before making their way into a warm tent for chili, music and cheer at Thompson's West End Park."

Grand Teton turns 75, still leaving tourists and locals in awe -

"John Turner has watched the changing seasons wash across the glacier-carved gorges for as long as he can remember. But the 36-year-old, who grew up and still lives on a dude ranch in the shadow of the Tetons, never tires of the view. "I don't care how many times you see them," Turner said. "If it's a beautiful sunrise or sunset, it takes your breath away." Just as glaciers sculpted the granite peaks, the beauty left in their wake continually shapes the lives of Jackson Hole residents and millions of visitors who each year pass through Grand Teton, which marks its 75th birthday on Thursday."

"Shortly after he arrived in Phillips last July, Naoaki Komatsu celebrated his 17th birthday. During his year-long stay in the community, he is a guest of the Jim and Ruthann Rehberg family, the second Japanese student the family has hosted for a year-long visit through LEX, an international 4-H exchange program. His family has also welcomed many Japanese students for shorter visits, said Anthony Rehberg, and his sister recently returned from a year-long stay in Japan. Having a host brother who is familiar with his culture has helped Naoaki adjust to being a student at Phillips High School. Like Anthony, Naoaki is a junior at PHS."
