World Mountain Running Trophy -

"The stage was set in Girdwood, AK, for North America's first IAAF World Mountain Running Trophy: The skies had remained sunny for a week, providing stunning views of the mountains and ocean; the challenging course was in great condition; and more than 250 of the world's best from 27 nations had assembled for the 19th running of the world championships. But just hours before the junior racers were to set off, the skies opened, drenching nearly 50 gleeful kids during their one-mile fun run. Race officials were less enthused as the rain soon turned to fluky snow."

"The last phase of the "broken snowshoe moon" has passed us by, and we are headed toward the last half of April. If you are an early riser in these parts, it is refreshing to watch as the sun arcs further into the southern hemisphere each day. I enjoy watching its position in relation to things in the forest, and also to the different places illuminated through the windows of the house while making its daily arrival over the ridge to our southeast. As I started this article last weekend, cold and snow had been in the spotlight for several days up at this end of the "Trail."

"The Kenai Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol will hone its search and rescue skills with three separate practice operations around the Kenai Peninsula this weekend. "We practice so that when the real thing happens we know what to do," said CAP member Jayne Hempstead. CAP, the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit and federally chartered corporation of nearly 60,000 people age 12 and up. On the peninsula, there are three CAP squadrons -- in Kenai, Homer and Seward. "The Kenai Composite Squadron of CAP has nearly 100 members, with a core of 30 of those members being active," said Capt."

"Oh crap, I thought to myself. I might as well turn around right now. This light stinks and the clouds are getting thicker. There is absolutely no way I'm walking all the way down to the lake, freezing my rump off and getting snowed on. Then I said a few choice cuss words in a row. I didn't use the word rump, either. Only butchers use the word rump. As in rump roast. My rump was roasted, all right, but mostly because I got some bad information again. I hate bad information. See, I was told the plows were coming to Two Medicine to clear the snow from the road to the lake."

Commentary--What Is Folk Art, Anyway? : Maine Antique Digest, May 2004 -

"A recent visit to the American Folk Art Museum in New York City (45 West 53rd Street) left me pretty confused. Whatever folk art is, I felt that the objects in the current display fudged the definition in unacceptable ways. To me, folk art is primitive or at least rustic in style. It is made by someone untutored in schools of art. Such art is called folk because it is made by common folk in the course of their normal daily activities. They are not professional artists making a living off the creation of a genre called folk art."

Mt. View outing club breaks new trails -

"Tourists converge on Maine every year to enjoy the state's abundant recreational resources - its mountains, rivers, lakes and trails - and some teachers at Mt. View want to make sure young people living here get the chance to have those same rewarding experiences. A handful of junior high teachers in Thorndike have formed the Mt. View Outdoor Recreation Program, more commonly known as the "outing club," to give junior high students a chance to hike, bike, canoe and ski."

"Audrey Schaiberger Click to Enlarge After a weekend of much welcomed moisture but surprisingly cool and snowy weather, juniors and seniors are hoping a warm April spring will be back by Saturday evening. Prom is this Saturday, April 17. Everyone will be looking their best while enjoying themselves at the elegant Hotel Colorado. Afterwards, the dancers can continue the celebration at the After Prom Extravaganza (APE), held at the high school. All students of GSHS then have Monday the 19th off for a staff development day: convenient to make up lost sleep and a day's worth of preparation for the biggest dance of the year!"

""Before [my son] was born, I had been doing jewelry for five or six years, and I have always had a home studio," says Laney Clark, jewelry designer and mother of Cody, 21/2. "I expected to continue working right through pregnancy and his birth. I thought I could do it all: I could have the home business and be a full-time mom. Boy, was I sadly mistaken." Clark has succeeded in continuing her jewelry business, but only because she was willing to scale back significantly to make it work. The biggest surprise, she says, "was just how much time I had to devote strictly to him, especially right after he was born."

CAP, the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit and federally chartered corporation of nearly 60,000 people age 12 and up. On the peninsula, there are three CAP squadrons -- in Kenai, Homer and Seward.
