Brief glimpse of light -

"It was strong and bright and its rays punched through the glass with a force I could feel. My cheek was hot to the touch and if I hadn't known glass blocks ultraviolet light I would have expected a sunburn.
I'd been driving for more than three hours, first north through Cochrane and then east to Olds and on to Red Deer. I turned back east again and went as far as Content Bridge over the Red Deer River before turning back west again.
I was just driving, not going anywhere in particular.
I had nothing in mind to do, nothing in mind to see. It just seemed like a good way to spend a day.
It was going to be a short day anyway."

Daily Tips
Injury Prevention
Knowing when to bag it
If you know that you are too sick or your pain too great on race day, then bag it. It's ok to race with a slight head cold, but don't run when you have full-body pain.
Marathon Recovery
Continue to carbo load
Your body needs the same types of nutrients after the race as it did before. A high-carbohydrate intake beginning immediately after the marathon rebuilds glycogen stores more quickly than if you start refueling hours after the race."

"It wasn't the typical Aspen/Snowmass vacation.
A group of visitors from around the country showed up in Snowmass this week, where they spent their days outdoors, wielding picks and shovels, swinging axes and slapping mosquitos.
At the end of a day's toils, they headed not for a shower, but back to camp, where they shared in cooking and dishwashing duties, and another night in their less-than-luxurious tent accommodations.
And, they paid for the privilege.
A group of some 20 campers, youths and adults, signed on for the Sierra Club service project, one of countless opportunities to work in the woods offered to club members."
Budig: MLB mulls steroids/records issue -

"SNOWSHOE - "*This record achieved during a period of alleged widespread steroid abuse in Major League Baseball."
Some fans are calling for just such an asterisk in the record books, after allegations of "juicing" involving players from Barry Bonds to Mark McGwire. And that has caused MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to wrestle with the issue, said Gene Budig, former president of the American League and current MLB senior adviser.
"That's one of the toughest issues the commissioner has to come to grips with," Budig said."
Bound for Glory -

"Each summer in towns and cities across the country, thousands of full-grown adults make utter fools of themselves in front of their friends and neighbors. They race beds through the streets. They row bathtubs in junk regattas. They spit watermelon seeds for distance. Call them childish. Call them weird. Whatever. Crazy competition is as American as, well, an apple-pie-eating contest.
For years, I've admired our wacky contests and longed to win one, but my talent for lunacy is limited. I considered entering a stone skipping contest held each July 4 on Mackinac Island, Michigan, but after two skips my stones always go splunk."

"July 14, 2005
Tucked high above the hamlet of Fulford, in Eagle County, is a pair of cozy yurts called the "Hidden Treasure Yurts." They've long been known for their excellent access to backcountry skiing, snowboarding and snowshoe touring terrain, but they're also a treat in the summer.
Located at about 11,000 feet, but accessible by car in the summertime, the yurts make an ideal base camp for trips to the top of New York Mountain (12,550 feet above sea level), over the ridge to New York Lake, or along the ridge to Nolan Lake. Good fishing is also available in the beaver ponds below Fulford."
