Welcome to Reptiles!
Reptiles include turtles, crocodilians, lizards, snakes and tuatara (which
are only found in New Zealand). Reptiles are most commonly found in the tropics, but can also be found in a variety of habitats throughout the warm and
temperate regions.
Modern reptiles are cold-blooded (aka ectothermic) and
are found on all continents except in Antarctica. Reptiles are the only
vertebrate that live on land that continuously grow during their entire
life-span. All reptiles are covered by scales, except for a few species of
Testudines (turtles).
Snakes are legless reptiles that live on the ground, in trees, or in water.
Snakes have no movable eyelids and no external ear opening,
and rely heavily on smell more than sight. Some snakes give birth to live
young, while others lay eggs.
There are around 250 species of turtles, also known as testudines and include
turtles, tortoises and terrapins. Turtles are the only reptiles with a shell for a shield and are also the only reptiles that do not have teeth. Turtles that live
all or part of their lives on land tend to have strong, heavier shells, while
those that spend nearly all of their time in water have lighter, more stream-lined
shells that aid in swimming. Turtles vary greatly in size and can be a small as a few inches long or as big as a full-grown human.
With more than 4,300 known species, the lizards are the most numerous and
varied group of reptiles. Lizards are very closely related to snakes. Lizards
represent the most diverse group of reptiles on earth in terms of habitat,
shape, size. Most lizards have four legs, although some have shrunken legs,
or even no legs at all.
Crocodiles
Crocodilians include crocodiles, alligators, caimans, etc. Crocodiles are
the largest reptiles. Crocodiles and alligators are large amphibious reptiles,
spending most of their life in water, but will come on land to sun, lay eggs,
etc. In spite of their prehistoric roots, crocs are the most advanced of
all reptiles. Crocs and alligators have well-developed senses, including
smell, hearing and eyesight.
Conclusion
Reptiles are extremely diverse and are popular as pets because they don't
require much food or care. Reptiles are hypo-allergenic, and can make great
pets for those folks allergic to fur and feathers. Some reptiles are very
long-lived and may outlive their owners. Of all animals kept as pets, reptiles
are the animals that most often do not reach their natural life span, as
they are more dependant on natural food and conditions.

The saliva of the gila monster has led to one of two exciting new drugs to fight type 2 diabetes
Both reptiles are endangered species and there is a danger that they will disappear from the planet. Fortunately, some bright scientists decided that before this happened we should discover how it was that reptiles were able to digest their meals so slowly that they could go for months without eating.
